I think 7mm-08 is a pretty good long range round. I believe it shoots flatter than the .308, I reD somewhere it is about as flat as the .270.
Opinions on a possible build
Just testing the water here. I have a Ruger M77 in 7x57 with the tang safety. Is there a build possible here or should I just hold out for a Rem action and just sell the ruger out right. What I would be looking for is a long range deer rifle.

I imagine it would take alot of gunsmithing to get that action to accept a WSM. I know it would take a different bolt. If the 7x57 equates the 7mm-08, I would stick with it. I would reload my own and find a load it likes.
