I have been looking to swap my wifes Tauras PT111 for a .38. Got and offer today, guy has two he has to offer.

One is a Colt Police Positive with 4 inch barrel, the other is a Rossi with 2 inch barrel. Not sure I really like the looks of the Colt. I know what the Rossi is worth, about the same as the PT111. Anyway, just throwing it out there...any opinions? Trade for one? No trade?

The Police Positive is chambered in 38 Colt New Police (.38S&W) not .38 Special. Ammo for it is gonna to cost about twice as much.

Yea, plus I just found out its the old model, small grip..wood grip. Not like the ones they are selling right now with the large rubber grips. Not that I couldnt change the grips but its not full size.

I'm not sure I wouldn't sell the Taurus and buy a revolver. You might come out better, over all. I think Academy carries a Rossi .38 for around $230 and I believe I've seen it on sale recently for $200. That'd give her a new gun and I'd think your Taurus would bring a little more than that.

I have seen where they are averaging $250 on gunbroker. I paid $239 used for this one. It does have some wear on the slide and needs rebluing. Last week I bought some G96 Bluing cream and was going to reblue it and give it a thorough going over and cleaning, then try to sell it for around $220. I posted some pics a while back, here is another one, you can see where it needs to be reblued. It is a good shooter.

Shame they don't take trades at Academy like they do at Gander Mountain. Your asking price on the Taurus sounds more than resonable. Folks around here are always looking for truck guns. Probably wouldn't last long, if advertised here.

I'd sell the Taurus then get what you want...Rossi would not be on my hit list...nor the colt u mentioned.

Unless your wife is a fairly experienced shooter...I don't think a snub nose 38 is all that appropriate either...sharp recoil...hard to hit with

Good concealed carry and for "real close" shooting however...you aint really said what its purpose was gonna be

The purpose is for carrying in the car. I would still have her use the Tauras but I am concerned that if she were to have to use it and there was a malfunction she wouldnt be able to clear it. I figured with a revolver she probably wouldnt have that problem. But your right, I am not gong for either of those guns offered.

Agreed. One of the things we did at the gunshow this weekend was to look at possible guns for my wife.

She really, really loved the feel of the new S&W Bodyguard (semi-polymer snubbie, with integrated laser)...it fit her hand perfectly. But even regular pressure .38 loads in that light of a revolver will be unpleasant for her, I think.

Her 2nd choice, and the one I'm going to pursue, is a Ruger SP101 in the new .327 Fed load. It's small with a small, comfy grip that fits her hand, just heavy enough to take the edge off the recoil but not so heavy that it's hard for her to aim, and can shoot .32 H&R magnum's while she works her way up to the full recoil .327 Fed loads.

The only things I don't like are (1) future availability and cost of .327 Fed and .32 H&R magnum...I'd rather not invest in a gun with questionable ammo availability. Anyone seen boxes of .45 GAP at Wal-Mart recently?, and (2) the DA pull might be heavier than is comfortable for her. She has a hard time with the DA pull on my S&W 38-2 Airweight, and I'd have to guess the Ruger DA pull will be comparably heavy.

I have a SP101 in 327 Federal...That's a hot load...even in that relatively heavy gun...I had the same thoughts of getting my wife to try it...but after seeing the muzzle blast..its a no go

course you can always shoot 32 H&R mag, 32 s&w's or 32 s&w short but what's the use

For a car gun for the wife...so far we've kinda settled on a 4 inch S&W 686 357 Mag shooting 38's...its very manageable

A 686 is an excellent pistol, probably the best 357 you can get now, but you'd have to come off some serious change to go with that PT111, a lot of change. I think a .38 would be a good pistol. Let her feel the recoil and see if she can handle it. If she can handle that PT111, she can handle a .38 I would think.

That 111 has to be pretty snappy...Think his concern is the wife's ability to manipulate it.

Sometimes the ladies get this "thing" in their head that they aint strong enough to rack or otherwise manipulate a semi...its just not true....its just something they gotta overcome...

Mine however, did not want to "overcome", ( I had her on my Glock 17) so a nice mid-sized revolver ended up being the ticket

Really? That's disappointing...based on the bullet weights and speed, I was thinking it'd be fairly mild like a 9mm.

I guess I'll do some research on .32 H&R to see how hot it can go. If it could replicate .380 performance, I'd be okay with that.

686 is out of the question...had my wife hold a few K-frames and she wasn't comfortable with the grip and trigger reach.

My smith airweight 38( a 637) is quite manageable with protection rounds. Regular jacketed or whatever not so much. Your welcome to try it out, just provide ammo. I might could be talked into getting rid of it, you never know. If your going to magnolia thursday, ill have it with me.

I generally do not ever recommend a small J-frame revolver to a woman....and I might presume fairly inexperienced shooter and expect them to be able to do much with it past 5 yards.

They sting one's hand pretty well. They are not pleasant to shoot and thus they don't get practiced with often enough..

The 640 gives you a little more beef and the grips are better than your typical S&W snub...so with 38's its not as bad

I think a medium sized quality revolver (read s&w here) is the way to go, unless she's gonna make the commitment to train some on a semi and do regular practice.

Its a car gun not a carry gun...a little heft is your friend as far as I'm concerned if they are newbie shooters

My 2 cents...

pm Cliff Cargil and see what He recommends...he's a certified NRA instructor
