I am thinking about buying one. Online cheapest I have found it is $202 without scope at Buds. Impact is selling them for $219 with scope. There is one at Academy with the 3x9x32 scope and synthetic stock for $179.

Debating between this and a used 10/22 with scope I found for $140. Already have a 10/22 though.

Any opinions on the 597?

Well I was looking at another one today. Its a CZ 22LR Bolt Action. I cant remember the model though. The guy told me its a trainer gun, the Hungarian Army used it to train troops before they graduated to the 30-06 (?), It is the same size, weight and feel of the issue gun with a heavy barrel. He is asking 300 cash. Anyone have any ideas what this gun might be? I only took a cursory look at it.

I got the 597 VTR accurate and functions well. The 10/22 is a good gun, I have had 4 or 5 but they aren't usually as accurate out of the box, as the Marlin 60 or the Rem 597 in my opinion. That's why everybody and their brother makes barrels and parts for them.

I guess you gotta ask yourself...what you want the gun to do....

shoot beer cans on Sunday afternoon, squirrel gun, or something that has a chance of covering up a dime at 100 yards...

If given a choice bolt action or semi, I'll chose the bolt every time

That Savage Mark II is a sweet rifle and I bet you could get one for under $400

Actually I am looking for a gun that I can participate in some of those rimfire shoots and at least be a little competitive. I see the Mark II going on Gunbroker for $200-$230. Also read that in 2008 Outdoor Life tested it and said not only was it the most accurate rimfire they tested that year, but the most accurate they tested ever, including the European Rimfires they tested. Their first four 5 shot groups tested .191, .202, .263 and .260 for an average of .229. They were fired with standard Remington/Eley and old lot of CCI Green Tag. Ill be on the lookout for one.

I was not BS'ing ya

There are lot of different versions of the Mark II...the link I sent ya is one I'd consider for coming to play with us "Big Boys" in 22 F class... The TR model ( Target Rifle)... :bsflag:

I doubt you'll get the TR model for 2 - 3 Benjamins..probably gonna be more like $350...but maybe I'm wrong
