I'm looking to buy 40 cal s&w auto. Carry occasionally, just go shoot and have fun. and reload. So far I am getting list down to Springfield xpm / xp, or S & W mp / sigma or Taurus PT 24/7 OSS DS / millelium pro.

Well opinions are generally worth what you pay for them, but with that in mind:

From the list you gave, Springfield XDM or XD or S&W M&P. While a lot cheaper, I feel the Sigma is a clear step below those although it would do what you described needing it to do. I don't have as much experience with the Taurus guns, but from the experience I do have they are not on the same level either. The PT 24/7 OSS is pretty nice in theory, but I had a friend get rid of an early one due to problems. That may not be fair though.

The XDM is Springfield's latest and greatest, so to speak, but if you wanted a 5" length or liked the XD feel better (or found a significantly better price), I don't think you would be going wrong by not getting the M. The M&P's are solid, too, and probably feel the best of the three in my hands. To me it would come down to personal preference on feel between these three. Where are you located? If you can find someone with one and shoot them first, it will likely tell you all you need to know.

Of course when you are talking polymer framed autos, it is hard not to include the Glock models. If you have already ruled them out, that is fine, but to me they are on the same level as the XDM, XD, and M&P's, with a few advantages such as parts availability, among others.

That's my $.02, anyway.

If ya want to target shoot, get a longer barrel. If ya want to CCW, go with a short barrel. That being said, I have both the S&W sigma and M&P compact in .40. The Sigma has a really heavy trigger pull which takes alot of getting used to. It is the lower end of the S&W 40's as I understand it, but is very reasonably priced ($230-$280?) and is reliable. Shoots well once ya get used to the trigger. I keep it bedside now for home defense. I bought the M&P .40c beginning of 2010 for CCW and love it. Small enough to fit in the small of your back comfortably and really shoots nice. Have not had a problem with either gun and have put a few hundred rounds through both. My wife actually likes the Sigma better than the M&P, I of course like the M&P. I have been intrigued by the Tuarus slim line 40. Do not have experience with it, but I like the narrow frame and small size for a .40. I am just above the novice level when it comes to gun handling and experience, so some of the experts will probably be able to guide ya with more details. Good luck and keep us posted with what ya decide.

The XD and M&P are light years ahead of the Sigma and Taurus. I personally prefer the XD, but like the others I'm surprised you haven't listed glock.

The XD and MP have several aftermarket parts available as well so I wouldn't let that be a deciding factor. Sights, barrels, pearce grips and trigger components are easy to come by.

Own the Sigma in 40S&W ... own the M&P in 9mm and it is far superior to the Sigma. Would NOT buy another Sigma .. Got a Beretta 96 in 40S&W that I like ...

For carry I'd say go with the xdm compact when it comes out in 40! It's not there yet but I bet it will be before the year is out. I love my xdm40! I recently held a m&p compact in 40 and it felt like a sweet gun, but I can't personally vouch for it's performance like I can the xdm

Ditto, NO SIGMA. Get XD, Glock, FN, S&W-M&P, or SIG.... I have the SIG2022 in 9mm, and it's a great shooter...a little heavy and bulky for CC though.... in 40 cal, my Glock23 is a great shooter as well, and easier to CC... I don't have an XD in 40....yet.... but my full sized XD's (not XDm's) in 9 and 45 are both awesome!!!

Sorry, doesn't really look like I helped narrow your choices...I would tend to lean towards the XD...and will probably buy a compact model at some point...

FWIW I owned a Gen 1 Glock 23 (mid-sized 40) for many years and it was fantastic. Accurate and dependable. Can't say one bad thing about it except the cheap plastic sights that it came with. I eventually upgraded the slide release, mag release, night sights, and had it ported. Loved the interchangeability of the parts. Later on I bought a factory non-ported barrel and it was so simple to just drop in that barrel and shoot non-ported whenever I wanted.

Currently my 40 is a Taurus 24/7 OSS. I love it too. Accurate and dependable. Mine has been flawless, but if you spend enough time online, you'll see that Taurus guns have their share of problems. However they have a lifetime warranty and they'll make it right if you give them a chance. I switched from Glock to Taurus only because I needed an external safety, but I've been really happy with the Taurus. Good prices can be found on the first generation 24/7 because they just came out with a generation 2.

For the record, I've never handled or shot 40 cal from Springfield, Smith & Wesson, Ruger, etc.

I own an XD Tactical in the 9mm and .45 and love both of them. My wife has an XDM 9mm and really likes her pistol as well. I would highly recommend trying out your choices at a range if you can find some people that have the pistols that you are looking to purchase. We have members at our club (Magnolia Rifle & Pistol Club) who would let you shoot their pistols if you wanted to try them out. I would gladly let you try mine if you were in the area.

Did not list glock because of isuses with bulged brass on the reloading.

Ive got both a sigma 40 and a m&p compact 40. Theres several things that should interchange parts wise between them, the magazines will interchange, the part of the trigger mechanism that makes the sigma pull so heavy is very different though. The sigma does fit my hand better, but with the changeable grip swell parts the m&p is not far behind. I dont know where your located, but if your local your welcome to try both of mine.

I shot friend's xdm . Fit well, felt right. One shot to get used to sights, then 3 within 4" circle at 20 yds, I thought not bad for only experience I have is with 22 Browning Challenger. Just wanting different opinions before leaping.

Of the guns that you listed I prefer the XD. IMHO you should really consider a Glock. If you want to be an "expert" on your gun owning a Glock will make that relatively easy. They are simple which make diagnosing problem (in the rare event that they occur) very easy. After market parts are also plentiful. You won't be so lucky with a Taurus or Sigma
