I am looking for some ammo for a friend of mine who lives in Madison (city limits) and has a problem with squirrels getting into his house. He wants to kill some squirrels with a .22 rifle, but he needs something very quiet. I have given him a box of .22 shorts and a box of .22 cb long (same powder but in a long case for loading ease). I would like to but some .22 bb caps. I haven't seen any in years but I feel sure they still make them. All I can find is cb short conical ball which is just a .22 short 710 fps. Does anyone know where I can buy some locally? I found some online but they are always around $25/$30 per 100 which is outrageous. Your knowledge/input would be greatly appreciated.

ps: looking online for "bb cap" is an abbreviation for baseball cap...noy very helpful. :)

Bass Pro Shop should have Aguila Colibri or Super Colibri. A low noise indoor/outdoor pest control .22. Their website is being worked on...No good air rifle available? I know you've thought of that just mentioning. Go to Natchezss.com for description if need. He won't get nearly close enough for CCI snakeshot. Colibri is the slower of the 2 above. No powder...just primer. You may already know this just trying to assist...

Ive shot that out of my savage markII,sounds like a finger snap, I have a good bit of it if you want a few rounds for testing. I would recomend aguilas 60 grain supersniper subsonics, they are just as quiet or maybe quieter than cb rounds. I have a 50ct box i can sell,$5. I also have lots of cb rounds too, cheap.

+1 on Colibri.

The Super Colibris are louder.

They are not recommended for rifles but I have never had any problem in rifles (and rifles are much quieter.)

Colibri will not cycle a semiauto and will not work in a gun labeled "Long Rifle Only". They also hang up in LR magazines.

They work fine in my Marlin bolt action tube fed 918T.

Not entirely true, they feed fine in my both my markII 's. My 10/22 as picky as it is will chamber them too. The walther p22 i had fed them fine too, no it wouldnt cycle either of the semi autos but worked great manually cycling them.

Had a squirrel that was looking poorly but stayed up in the tree away from the cats. I shot him with a .22 short in a neighborhood. No one heard (or called the police if they did). Those colibris are quite also but not sure of the knock down power.

Not much...really designed for something like...in a cellar or such...close but instead of snakeshot which is real close...

The Super Colibri work great.. i shot a tweety bird off the top of a light pole from 30yds. anything over 25yds and you can see it start veering off course.

With the suppressor on my Savage Mark II FV, its so quiet its just silly. Oh and the SC drops 16' at 100yds :D

Keep in mind that a powerful springer air rifle will likely be just as loud if not louder than a Colibri or Super Colibri. I've got an RWS Model 34, and it's a nice loud bark.

I haven't had any problems shooting Super Colibri's out of my 10/22, but then it's an old rifle with the original 16"ish barrel. If you have a brand new .22 rifle with an 18" or 20" barrel, you may want to check the bore between shots if you don't see the bullet hit.

Wow, what a wealth of knowledge. The cheaper than dirt link was awesome. I even bought some cb shorts and cb longs from them and never saw the colibri. My friend has bought several cheap air rifles and he just gets frustrated with them because they are so weak. But the .22 short is a little too much power, I know "too much power"...well he is in his attic shooting. He has counted 20 or so squirrels in his attic. He carefully placed numerous smoke bombs up there and sort of fumigated the attic...didn't kill anything but they all came running out the hole. I told him to be sure not to close up the hole until they were out or he would have a stinky attic and possibly in the walls. I am going to try to go over to his house this afternoon after he gets off work and see if I can help. Thank y'all for the feedback.

The CCI CB shorts and Longs that I have shot worked best in an old Remington single shot that has been in my family for around 60 years. Check your barrel after you shoot a few of these rounds as they leave a lot of residue but sound quieter than a pellet rifle in my old Remington with a 24 inch barrel.
