Was given a cool old Winchester today. Truly a sad story. Went through a house fire. Got hot enough for the stocks to burn off. Not sure what I’ll do with it. Probably just hang it on the wall in my office. May try to get it unstuck and see if it will fire without exploding. Probably not.

Shame. Wells Fargo commemorative.

Anyone have a cracked or beat up stockset they’d be willing to give me?

What is that solution I've seen showing on this forum that removes rust and oxidation???

It might be helpful.

Try Numrich Gun Parts for the stock set.

Believe I might have a set. Texting you pics in a minute. And a before and after of a revolver I did that was in a house fire. I know you're not a cerakote person, but..... lol
But if you're not going to fix and shoot, I'd probably just clear it, if that.

Since the color of the metal is unchanged i would say its probably safe to shoot. It would be worth getting somebody with a rockwell hardness tester to check it out, i bet bryant machine probably has one. If not i can try to find somebody.
I have always adhered to the rule, that if a fire is hot enough to burn a walnut stock, then at that temperature, it was hot enough to alter the metal, turning it pretty soft, taking out the temper of the metal. All springs are probably shot. At best, a "wall hanger", but I would still remove the firing pin to be on the safe side.

This ones on EBay there several others as well, you shouldn’t have a problem finding stocks. Great looking rifle!

I agree. But I’m not sure if it burned it completely away or if it was badly charred and the owner removed it.

The hammer spring is shot though.

i am thinking about globbing some jb weld into the chamber to keep it from being used should someone steal it/ inherit it from me without the story.

Don't fill the chamber...just make sure everybody you like or are related to knows the background of the gun. If somebody steals it, make sure they steal the loaded rounds in a bag attached to it...and make sure each round is full of Bullseye behind a 200 gr. bullet. ;)

Hmm good point. But then the thief would probably sue me and win.

That is what I was thinking. Is it 30,000 cup?. Barrels can be found for that gun. Might not have the stamped message but it could be shot again. At the worse replace all springs, bolt and barrel.
No dis-respect to Mr checker. Most people would not try to resurrect it, I would and I would keep it. It all depends on how hot it got and water damage. If the bore and chamber are good, I would try it.
