so after being pretty disgusted by the poor choices and prices of ARs at the gun show this past weekend, I've decided to just build my own! I'll be ordering a flat top parts kit. my fiance's brother in law has built several ARs and has agreed to help me out, I'm going to try to do the majority of it myself, and hopefully just have him to help guide me.

1. I'll need a stripped lower. Where in the Hattiesburg area can i order one? I've been thinking a Stag or S&W.

2. I don't know what kind of front sight to go with. I'm pretty inexperienced w/ ARs. I'm going to be putting a red dot, or holographic optic on it. should i go with a conventional front sight post, or a flip up? i've been told the post wouldnt get in the way, but like i said, I have no experience with this kind of set up.

any suggestions would be great! and not just pertaining to the questions i've already asked

Which kit are you going with? I got the M4 Carbine kit from Blackthorne, flat top with conventional front sight. I have a folding rear buis ordered too. I have a cheap TruGlol red dot I am going to put on it for now, will probably get one of Primary Arms Aimpoint clones later for it. I waiting on my lower to come in. Hopefully later this week.

This is also my first AR but I am already planning out my second one. :lol4:

There are great how to's on ar15.com that show step by step how to put the lower together. Doesn't look that hard, if you take your time.

i'm looking at the del-ton 16" lightweight rifle kit, thats just what the bro-in-law recommended, he said he's a couple in the past and had good luck with them. I'd post the link to it, but my internet in Hattiesburg is a joke(stupid AT&T, how did we ever let them take over everything!?)

for the rear i'll definitely just be ordering a flip up.

i also have seen the how-to's, looks pretty straight forward, but i'm not a mechanically inclined person(i know its not exactly mechanics but still), so i'll need someone around to help me out

id prob go with optics ready upper and gas block front with flip up sights if you are planning on running optics. we are sighting in a s&w tomorrow with nc star halographic sight and nc star halographic sight. both were enexpensive sights. ask dockrocker about stripped lowers or world wide fire arms. delton has some good deals on uppers and so does rock river arms. when picking out furniture keep magpul in mind its high quality and ergonomicly comfortable. midwayusa.com is also a great site to look for parts on. Delton you can order the full kit(minus lower) for around $600.

is this a budget build? need some price specs
Not a budget per se.....but if I'm going to get over $800 with it then I might as well just spend the extra $100 and get a built m&p that's already exactly what I want(saw 2 at the show for $875ish).

The prices I've found on the 2 lowers I looked at have been $100-120 online. And the delton kit I've been looking at is is $465 I think. So that would keep me right around $600 before the optics(which will be much later on so I'm not including it right now).

Call Mike Smith at Smith's Speed Shop. He's nearby in Purvis. I bought a Del Ton stripped lower from him Sunday at the Jackson Show. $119 plus tax. Had several other brands also. No shipping, no transfer fees or hassles, keeps the money local. He will treat you right.

keep in mind the m&p is built as a s&w spec gun not mil-spec or commercial spec as stag, double star, or rra. example: buffertube is not mil spec or commercial spec, therefore the magpul stock(for instance) will be loose. i believe $600 on delton was with magpul furniture and chrome lined barrel. take my advice shoot several different set ups before you decide what exactly you want to build. i bought mine and have been investing a good bit of money in mods. stripped lowers go for around 100-120 but you have to have a ffl license to order them seeing as how thats the registered part. i would get a multi- calliber lower for future expansion.

That's the kind of info I'm looking for! Ha! Cuz if I order one online for $100 I'm still gonna have to pay at least another $20 to whoever I ship it to

like i said its not a budget build per se...but i want it to be a very basic build. i'm not trying to make it all tacted out and whatnot. my only requirement is a flattop for a optic, m4 style stock, and thats really about it! i am probably going to keep this gun very very simple. if i decide to go all out later then i'll probably just do it all over again

and i didnt know that for sure about the m&p, but i assumed as much, since basically everything they do, is done to their own specs, and not milspec

I just got off the phone with a guy at Smith's speed shop and he has 10 or so lowers in stock. I can't remember what all but I do remember he said s&w, rock river, delton, bushmaster, dpms, spikes tactical(I believe he said it was a Punisher edition? And several other brands I can't remember. But out of those options what would y'all recommend? Have experience with? The bushmaster is pushing what I'm willing to spend at $189

I quizzed Mike pretty extensively when I bought my Delton from him. I gave him multiple opportunities to "sell me up" but he never tried to. The feeling I got from him was Ford v. Chevy. They all work fine, some are just shiny, some matte. Some have Skulls and such on them, some are plain. He could have very easily talked me into a Bushmaster or something but he chose not to. I ended up with the cheapest he had. Can't tell you how I like it because it's still sitting in its' little box :p

I'm getting ready to build an ar10. Anyone know where I can get an armalite ar10 lower around the Grenada area or an cfl that doesn't charge 50 bucks to do the paperwork. And that is with a CCW.
Hahaha threadjack much? Seriously though there was a thread(mightve been a sticky) where people listed off good dealers. Maybe one of those is around your area
