Was talking to a fellow the other day who just got back from Kansas shooting praire dogs. I think BubbaT was with me? Stated he hunted for 3 days and took 2000 rounds -- brought back 300 rounds. Shots were made from 75yrds to 300yrds ... could shoot at them further off if you wanted too, but there were plenty within 300yrds!! Hunted 0n 10000 acres .... said the land owner gave them the gate keys and said go for it!! $100 a day. It is in Syracuse, KS (980 miles from Jackson) -- Hatcher Ranch. Only 1 motel in town at $40.00 a night. --coyote hunting, jackrabbits and prairie dog hunting

Look it up on the net when I go home and here is what they say ...

Sign me up...I tried to get ya'll to go this fall...no takers....Need 5 or 6 guns cause they gonna get hot fast....

Burning up a couple 3 or 4 barrels in 3 days would be loads of fun...obviously the biggest expense is ammo...so better get to reloading those 22-250's, 223's and 308's

I'm in all the way....when we leaving.....

I was in Larned, KS a few years ago and a friend asked us if we would like to go Prairie dog hunting. He set us up in a field that had not been hunted in for 15 years. We had a Chinese made heavy .22 LR sporter and 975 round of Federal target ammo. I made shots from 50 to 125 yards. I shot 400+ cartridges and killed nearly that many. The ground looked like a brown mass moving over it when they were moving. You can ask Jack Withers in Woodville, he is my witness. It was unbelievable.

If I ever go,

I'll take the Kimber 82G for short shots

others that will go will be a Savage 22-250 (have 2 barrels), a bolt 223 (drooling on the Cooper's right now), a 243 Win Bolt and a 260 Rem Bolt...plus a truckload of ammo

Looks like I'm gonna have to go solo :tears:

We just got back from a trip to carbondale Col,Buddy owns a cattle ranch and wanted us to come and shoot the doggys :) I think they would of paid us to shoot them. They said the cows will step in the holes and break there legs,Not good,Ive never been really hunting before, just started playing with guns in November and needed the pratice anyway. It was a 23 hour drive,"the worse part"Like youall said there like rats ,there everywere,we shot for 3 days and didnt even make a dent in them, the smaller cal guns are better suited for them up to 300yards,buddy had a 17hmr and was dead on.It was good target pratice :) If ya get the chance to go its well worth the trip!!!

the most fun i ever had shootin was at my uncles cattle pasture in tx killin gophers. i think me and my cousin killed 200 in 2 days with my marlin 60 mod 22. we were around 12 yo and just knew we were the great white hunters of the plains of tx. we would kill them from 15 yards out to 100 to 120 or so. man i mis being a kid.

So what we talking here, renting a van and loading up. I'd like to shoot .22 inside 100 yds and 223 past that. Ain't got those high dollar guns, bolt action .22 and an AR or two would do it for me.
'Neck, you think 2-3 days hunting would burn up that many barrels?
Other than the land owner, gas and van, what expense would be involved? Out of state permits? Wouldn't mind taking some bug out bags and see how they do in real world conditions. Lighting a fire in the backyard and really a true test. Behind would be dragging after 2-3 days on the ground, they got in local chiropracters?

i talked to capt last thursday about my uncle in carthage tx bout a 4 hr drive(maybe 30 min past shrevesport). he has a good bit of land he cattle ranches on and from a kid about 10 till i was 20is i went all the time gopher huntin. if enough people wanted to go over i would talk to him about letting us come pick alot of these dudes off. i always used a 22 0n his place but i am almost positive we could take 223 and 22 250 and any shotgun you wanted and pistols. it would only cost gas ammo and lodging. unless we camp out on the river. just an idea. ill start enother post if some show interest besides me and capt. i think shoe was there and was interested as well. my memory slips me sometime.
