ok, when i was in contact with the guy at Dan Wesson about having my non fluted cylinder put on, he was saying he thought it was gonna cost about 150...

now the lady just calls and says that it will be 150 labor, 96 for the cylinder, and 30 for return shipping...

is this an acceptable price for this work? i have never had this stuff done before, so i just dont know...

she also said it would be a 6-8 week turn around on it.

i dont think i would mind paying it if that is a normal price and wait time, but i dont want to be taken advantage of either...

for the price to all of a sudden jump $100 kinda makes me feel that way...

hmmm...

To me the jump in price is key. It's worth whatever folks will pay for it, but $276 is nearly twice the original estimate you were given. Personally, I would be ok with them adding the $30 return shipping on, but much more than that would really bother me. It's a shame when estimates turn out to be completely worthless. It's not like a mechanic that finds things much worse when they actually tear into something. They knew what they had to do here and should have been able to give you an accurate figure, in my opinion anyway.

Good luck with your decision. The bad thing is just to have it returned you'll have to pay them shipping...

i went ahead and told them to send it back. it cost me $50 to have it sent to them, and will cost me 30 to have it sent back to me...

80 in shipping charges would have given the local smith a little work on it or my savage or my levergun project... especially considering they didnt even check the guns timing or anything... oh well.

i emailed the guy back and told him i was disappointed in the near $100 discrepency of his original quote. especially after i sent him two different emails to confirm the price.

lady also told me 6-8 weeks for the proper bluing to be done. is that right???

I'd definitely be upset with something like that. I'm in the process of dealing with a gunsmith and his final price was about 8% over what he quoted me. I wasn't too upset with that, as he was pretty dang close.

But a nearly 100% increase in price is unacceptable.
