Reloading the .35 whelen.

Who here loads for the .35 whelen ? I just bought an apex in a .35. I kinda wanta try some 180 grain bullets in it. If you do reload for it any tips? I've got tons of 30.06 brass and plan on resizing it to the .35. I've heard this is not hard to do with plenty of lube.

Just loaded 3 different powder charges and fired them at 100 yards yesterday. I was using Nosler Accubonds in 225 gr. The best performance was with 58.5 gr of IMR4350. I was getting 11/4 groups, but I have several interruptions during the test. I have more loaded and will give another try later this week.

Its on my list of things to do...but its way down on the list.....How much do you plan on shooting it anyway...That sucker will drain a powder can in a hurry

Need to be loading them 225 - 250 Grain Big boys....Whatever Barnes makes in TSX that's what I'll load

TSX is all I will ever use for hunting if they are available

Looks like barnes offers a 200 and a 225 pills in the tsx. I'm hopeing to find a 180 grain too get it to shoot a little flater.

Longgun60 did you load three differant loads of imr4350? What kind of gun is it?

I just got back from the range today. Shooting 225 nosler balistic tips(Early Accubonds). Two best groups were .6 and .9 at 100 yrds. Using 58 and 57.5 gr of R15. I was shooting TC encore.

Yes, I used 54.5, 56.5, and 58.5 of IMR 4350. I have a T/C Prohunter with 35 Whelen SS barrel. To get more velocity, I will have to use RL-15 or other powder.

what kinda velocity are you getting out of rl15?

I don't have a chrony, so all I have is the load data from Nosler. IMR 4350 54.5=2328, 56.5=2379, and 58.5=2440. Using RL-15 goes from 2698 to 2789fps. Right now I have no RL-15 to try, so I will use this for hunting this year. Maybe I can play more after season. I have the 28" barrel, but you have to give up 3.340" for the bore. I reckon it is between 24" and 25".

No chrony here either. I just use nosler data and see what load shoots the best. I just started at the max and stepped it down .5gr for each load. 59, 58.5, 58, 57.5, 57, 56.5 etc.
56.5 gr 6" group
57 gr 2.5" group
57.5 0.9" group
58 0.6" group
58.5 1.8" group
59 3.0" group

again using R15 with TC encore prohunter w/SS prohunter barrel.

I have T/C Prohunter and have been thinking about getting a 35 Whelen barrel for it. Did you have any headspace issue with it?

If by headspace problems you mean flattened primers, no I haven't had that to happen. I don't have guages to measure headspace. If any one does have headspace problems, you can go to www.Bellm.com(?). They sell guages and the tools and shims to add to your rifle. It's only a matter of removing the firing pin housing and inserting their shims. They also sell heavier hammer springs, and a trigger spring kit that brought my trigger pull from over 7 1/2 Lbs down to 2 1/2. I had the heavier hammer spring, but was too hard to pull back so I put the original back in. So far no problems, goes bang everytime.

I kinda thought the point of shooting 35 Whelen was to use Big bullets....35 Whelen sweet spot I thought was for bullets 225 - 250 grains....

I've seen commercially made ammo that claims 2850 fps out of a 200 grain bullet so I suppose 3000 fps is possible...

I don't think this cartridge's claim to fame is "flat shooting"....but more like flattens anything shot with it.

I don't have to have big heavy bullets to kill deer. I'm just trying to find a sweet spot that will reach up to 300yds. Yes the heavier ones will work but I didn't buy it because it's a thumper I bought it because it's got better performance than say the 45/70,444.

A casual search of commercially available ammo in 35 Whelen reveals no 180's that I could find....That might tell you something

Its interesting...I think accubonds suck...I would not give you a plug nickel for one...and everything I've ever hit with a Barnes TSX has been "laid-out"
