I have a 700 .30-06 that I would like to improve. First, I want to replace the stock with one that will free float the barrel.

What are some reccomendations? I want to install it myself and I don't need to break the bank.

Look at the hogue OM stocks with the full aluminum bedding block. I bought one for my wife's .243 and we like it.

Well to really improve accuracy I would get a trigger job, recrown the barrel, and then get the proper bedding in a stock...for lower end I prefer HS stocks.

mine is the sps tactical with the pillar bedding. my rifle is for hunting/fiddle farting at the range. great stock for the money especially if your on a budget like me.

I found instructions on the Internet and adjusted my trigger. They are user adjustable. I think there was two adjustment screws. You have to remove the action from the stock.

A competent gunsmith can do a really nice trigger job on the old factory triggers, the new X Mark Pro triggers are crap and rather inconsistent. If you want a really nice trigger get a Jewell or Timney. Yes your 700 ADL can be converted to a detachable mag. you will have to buy a new stock that has been cut for the a BDL DM like the HS Precision model PSS 071 DM LA.

I have the cheapest R700 SPS in .270, factory trigger adjusted down to 1# and its as consistent as far as my trigger finger can tell.
Factory rifle with just the trigger adjusted, reloads and it will stay under 1MOA out to 1000yds on cold bore shots. Heat the barrel up and groups just went to 100MOA

Work up some loads and get that trigger adjusted. You will be good to go.

Good luck. You're well on your way to having an addiction. The 700s, while not the strongest action out there, really are the most customizable. You'll enjoy it.

What is the difference between ADL, BDL and CDL?

Mine has a basic synthetic stock with blind magazine. It also came with iron sights. I need to remove the front, still.

ADL has the blind mag. BDL is finished finer with bottom metal, and the cdl is about the same.

If yours has the adjustable trigger, the DIY trigger is the way to go!
