Flag on the play. It's been several years since I've fooled with a Rem. trigger but I think there are three screws. My Rem.'s are all very old and I could be wrong. Anyhow, It's possible to mess up here and your safety is my primary concern. Try this test. Point the rifle up and close the bolt on an empty chamber. Now thump the but on the floor with the Safety off. O.K.? Repeat but this time point the rifle straigt down when you close the bolt. One of the screws puts forward pressure on the trigger so it engages the sear completely. My brother had a bad experience with this.
Remington 700 Upgrades
I have a 700 .30-06 that I would like to improve. First, I want to replace the stock with one that will free float the barrel.
What are some reccomendations? I want to install it myself and I don't need to break the bank.

I'm leaning toward the hogue, just can't bet the price. How expensive to convert to detachable magazine or bel style from blind magazine?
I like mine a lot. I went from a blind style(bdl) to a flop down (adl). All I had to do was change out the bottom metal, bought it off eBay. I don't have them anymore as I am on a new computer since then. I searched the Internet and found a couple. Read over them and you'll know which to use. I went with the one that had more safety checks and went into greater detail with each step. It also had diagrams soi knew I was turning the correct screw.
I didn't read the other replies but here are some good upgrades:
Barrel- if you really want to increase your accuracy then a high quality barrel is a must have
Stock replacement- most factory stocks are crap besides the 700P police stocks, HS precision and McMillan make great stocks.
Stock bedding and free floating the stock- this is a very cheap and easy to do mod that you can do at home and provides good results for the price, can be done with your factory stock or with aftermarket stocks
Trigger- don't bother with the factory trigger, go with an aftermarket trigger like Timney. Expect to spend around $150 but with a complete replacement trigger you can install it yourself at home, you would pay at least half of that to have a gunsmith do work to your factory trigger and it still wouldn't be as good
Base, rings, scope- this is VERY important for good accuracy. You can have a $3000 rifle that is capable of 1/4" MOA groups but without good optics, base, and rings you will NEVER shoot anywhere near what your rifle is capable of
Gunsmithing- you can have your action/bolt trued/blueprinted
