I came across a nearly new Rem. 700, SS, Lam. Stock, 7mm UltraMag a month ago and bought it simply because it was a good deal for a really beautiful and powerful (and un-registered :) ) gun. Then I found out about Remington's "Power Level" ammo for the 7mm U.M. and the 300 U.M. So far I have only found and shot the ultra mag ammo (power level 3), what a kick, but dead on accurate and repeatable if your shoulder can take it!

The theory being that in 7mmUM - power 1 = 270, power 2 = 7mm mag, power 3 = 7mmUM
and in 300 - power 1 = 30-06, power 2 = 300 mag, power 3 = 300 UM

And the ammo levels are supposed to be interchangable in the rifle without re-sighting. I know most of you are reloaders, but has anyone tried this system? Results?

If I can find the level 1 and 2 ammo, I'll do my own test and report on the forum. Sure seems like a good idea, if for no other reason than practicing with less recoil, shooting lower levels on small food plots, and still being able to reach out and touch if desired....the UM ballistics are nice.... Going on my first S. Tx hunt this year and hope to use this gun...I'll carry my Savage 300WSM too...it's a proven killer.

msredneck,
What's walking with a cane got to do with shooting a 30-378? Is the cane supposed to make it kick harder? I've got hip problems and shoot a 300 Weatherby, which without a muzzle brake, tends to recoil as much as a 30-378 WITH a muzzle brake. I guess if you do like the cowboys in the old westerns, and shoot from the hip, there might be a problem.

the power factor stuff is kinda a crap shoot. Also a little common sense will tell you that a 30-06 round is not going to be balistically identical to to a 300 um nor a 270win to a 7mm um. I personally hate any bullet that has "ultra mag" in the title. :( my bones hurt thinking about it

THE LAST WORD

This topic seemed to have "RECOILED".......

I will attempt to find the 3 power levels of 7mmUM ammo (PM me if anyone finds the level 1 and level 2, I have the level 3). At such time, I will perform a "study" on the performance/ballistics and will post the results........

I will have the 7mmUM at the M&G if you wanna feel the 'coil...... $2 a round, but FREE to anyone under 5' and 130lb.... :rotflmao:

I've only seen "Reduced Recoil" ammo for the .260 Remington (heh, it already has fairly light recoil), 7mm-08, and .308 Win. All of those are spoken of nicely from everything I've seen but I've never used any, although I've thought about getting some of the .260 RR just to have around. Of course, I've not really looked for (or at) any of the "Level X" that you mention. I'll look around and see. I would imagine your best bet would be to search at http://www.midwayusa.com or http://www.cabelas.com
