My wife's best friends brother rented a car to go to FL for the State game and my wifes friend sent us a text that day telling us that he had found a 357 under the seat of the rental car  . No one knew what to do about it so I told her to have him call the police and give them the SN (and possibly the gun) and then call the rental company to see if anyone reported it but shes a knucklehead and told her brother to leave it with the rental company  so the owner can pick it up.

I thought he should have given it to me...provided that the rightful owner didnt claim it of course but that didnt happen :( .

I thought this was an interesting turn of events and thier inability to deal with it was frustrating but mildly amusing as well. There hasnt been any follow up on the story as far as I know, I'll ask my wife about it and try to post it as the facts unfold

Yeah, I'd have turned it into the PD. If it didn't come up as stolen and no one claimed it, I would think it belonged to the finder.
I would call the local PD and ask if it had been reported as found by the rental car place. If not, the PD needs to make a visit.

I found one in a rental too. I turned it in to the rental company as well. I didn't want to mess with it and let them worry about it.
Guess it would depend on what gun it was, if it was a .25 Raven, I wouldn't mess with it. If it was a $500 S&W I'd make sure if it weren't claimed it went to me. The only way you'd find out was the PD and one of them may try to lay claim on it.

NCIC has catagories for entering guns as "LOST", "FOUND", and "STOLEN".

If the owner reported it as LOST, then it can be returned.

I think it's best to be HONEST.

What if you left a case at the range?
Wouldn't you want me to do all in my power to assure you got your weapon back?

Leaving it to someone else would be LAST on my list of actions.
That's how they "disappear" and never turn up again.

Actually I had something like this happen to me several years ago. I sold a truck, about a month later I missed a Ruger 22 auto that I thought was in my safe. After searching the house, shop, cars and trucks I decided that I must have left the gun in the truck I sold. I contacted the new owner to ask if I could look. There it was under the drivers seat in the case. He had never looked under the seat and was glad to see me get the gun back.
