Ruger 10-22 issues....are they "normal"???? Maybe a little advice or guidelines?

I shot 250 rounds with my 10-22 yesterday evening - too much fun shooting multiple steel 3" and 4" targets at 60 to 70 yards from varied positions.... anyhow, I cleaned it this morning.... a few concerns came to mind:

1. Is it OK to shoot 250 rounds like that fairly quickly at one sitting? I took break and did run the bore snake down after 150. Mine is the bull bbl target model...the barrel was hot, but could still be held by the bare hand....barely....

2. Is the peeling off of the black coating inside the action normal? It is coming off inside the top of the aluminum housing above the bolt. I peeled off what was loose and hanging...is this related to heat buildup from 1. above?

3. Preference on cleaning/lubrication/complete breakdown or only parial on a regular basis? (this is the first time I've removed the bolt, and only the 2nd time I've removed the BBL and trigger group....

Thanks ! :thanx:

Dont worry about hurting a 10/22, mines been seriously abused and somewhat neglected for years. I lost count at about 15 thousand rounds through it. Most of those were shot as fast as i could pull the trigger, it sounded full auto honestly. Every weekend for all of my teen years after i got it at least 500 rounds were shot, sometimes 3 or 4 times that. I never worried about cleaning it, still dont. It only gets cleaned when it starts having feed/extraction issues which is extremely rare. Only repair its ever had was i replaced all the springs a few years ago, seemed a good idea after all those rounds and roughly 20 years.

my reciever is like that and I have peeled most of the black off and is now greyish. don't think it will hurt is but can always get a dremmel and smooth the insides out a lil? I have shot several 550 packs in mine without running anything through mine but I am shooting steel targets and paper and not really worried about precision accuracy. mine is a plinker and for tearing up things that just look at me wrong so the 10/22 is the right choice.

As far as cleaning I run patches through it and since it is the easiest gun to take apart I do strip it all the way down everyonce and a while and give it a good cleaning.

thinking bout a getting a good receiver(KIDD maybe) and good barrel, trigger, and barrel and have a shooter but haven't done it.

The paint did peel on mine years ago, it now wears a coat of krylons finest semi flat black. If i ever get my powder coating stuff setup up it will be redone in a stainless looking ceramic i found.

Some the best care you can give that 10/22 is to feed it often and a lot when you do!! They are really durable and can withstand a lot of rounds without much maintenance ... However, a good cleaning will keep things running ...

I have the same issue with my 10/22 and peeling inside the receiver. I don't remember this problem with the other 10/22's I've owned. It doesn't seem to affect it for shooting though. I too run the heck out of it when I shoot it.

i dont think the inside of either of my 10/22s have had paint in them for years!!
It makes the action more smooth once it wears its groove in there..
Back in high school me and a friend use to waste a few bricks of 22s every weekend. Ive put well over 1500rd thru mine in one sitting.. and cleaning? thats for ARs and other guns that need it.
Ive gotten the factory barrel way hotter than ive gotten my AR barrels, thats pretty hot.. :D
I dont clean mine till it starts jamming, and that takes quite more than a few hundred rounds..

I got my first 10/22 back in 2000 or so, and ive gotten well over 250k round thru it. Still shoots good.. Wanna talk about a slick action?!?!
If you, for some reason, hurt that 10/22 ill buy it from you :D

COOL...thanks for all the comments....sounds like I'm good to go blasting away!! The only reason I did pull it all the way down was because I was having 4 to 5 no extractions per 25 round clip....and could feel the gritty movement.... It probably had a total of at least 3000 rounds before having to take it all the way down, and I still haven't pulled apart the trigger group...I sprayed it good with RemOil a few times until no more grit/dirt runs out ....

Love that gun... :gun:

The mags (not clips... :) ) could be your problem. First, there are CHEAP-ASS mags out there. Second, even good mags get dirty and need cleaning.

SGF, thanks for the correction...yes mags....(I'd had a couple when I made the original post ) the problems I had on that day were abnormal for the mag/gun combination based on the previous ~2500 rounds.... I use the butler creek steel liped mags...in my gun, they work better than the factory Ruger rotary mags...average is maybe one ftf or fte per 2 mags or more....so 4 to 6 per mag told me something was wrong...looking at ammo next....it was only the 2nd time I'd fired this type....
