Had a chance to get a mag fed one when I was a kid. Shot it and really liked it for a brush gun. Guy wanted $50. I went home to ask the old man for a loan and he told me I didn't need it and to beat it (in so many words). Taught me a leason to have a little cash set off to the side.
But to anwer your question, the one I shot was a sweet brush gun. Recoil was tolerable even for a kid but it was a hard hitter going by what we shot (junk yard stuff - car doors and appliances. Went right threw.).
If the price is right, go for it.

I got one and love it, i took it hog hunting with me last year. We were in some pretty good undergrowth, just right for bow hunting. But i still wasnt comfortable shootin a bow at a hog from any distance. So i loaded up some 300gr hornady xtp and it hits dead on at 50 and a touch low at 100.
My dad had one years ago and traded it for a dog for my mom, dog got run over a few months later and he wished he never got rid of it. So i found one that had been parkerized and got it and a Garand for him.

Got to shoot one this weekend. Man it is sweet! Anyone got one? This one is a tube fed model semi auto. Think they call it a deer stalker?
I've never heard anything but good about those older model, tube-fed Ruger .44's.

Everyone I've ever met who had one had nothing but praise for it. Everyone I've ever met who had one at some point and got rid of it ended up regretting it.

The more recent rotary magazine-fed ones didn't seem to ever generate the enthusiasm and loyalty of the old ones. Guess that's why Ruger dropped them. I think one of the issues with them was that the mags were squirrelly and not very reliable.

Don’t know what difference this makes, but it’s a lousy day and maybe I’ve got nothin’ better to do.

I got a .44 Ruger carbine when I was in AZ back in the 60’s. Eventually traded it off when I moved to WY.

That is what I grew up hunting with. Mine had a peep sight installed from the factory and think there werent many made this way. I killed a spike at 150 yards with 240 gr hydra-shocks.

Someone decided they wanted it more than me and borrowed it from me for keeps.

I had the opportunity to shoot one a couple of weeks ago. I was at the range and a guy shows up with one that he just bought. It was a great shooter with very little recoil and very accurate. Before that, I had never heard of one. It looked almost like a 10/22. Neat little gun.

The one with the factory peep sight is the model 44 RS. I love mine. It's a 1970 mfg.

I haven't found any documentation on how many RS models were made. I've only seen two. I saw one at a Jackson gun show several years ago but decided to look around some more before making an offer. When I came back it was gone. When I found this one in the pawn shop in Wiggins I grabbed it quick.

Mine did not have a peep originally. Had one installed and it looks to be in the identicle place as lrfan's. Mine does have the dovetail in the barrel, with a blank in it, account of having to remove the V notch sight so as to use the peep.
