S&W 686 4" and good day at range

Missed the match today-22Jan'11...I forgot and was at least gonna show up...Instead I wound up on the Back 40 at Magnolia after meeting another member for the first time and having some good conversation...afterwards I had it all to myself. I began with the .45 but quickly switched to the 686- loaded of course with some Anderson (way back) 158g LSWC .38Spc to test- Do-All .38-.44 Auto Reset. http://www.do-alltraps.com/
It worked fine after I had a moments trouble and realized I had set it up backwards...LOL>then it was plenty good enough. Make sure if you ever use one like this you stake it down good for it needs the stabilizations for the plates to swing right. After a reload I stepped back to the pitchers mound and tried then stepped back a little more. Oops...I missed but next shot there it was(the plates are 4 1/2". Hope I remember that at the February 5th Renegade Steel at Magnolia. I may run the 686 if I can get a couple more speedloaders. I sometimes carry a velcro break pouch on range for extra rounds. Saves bag trips. Only trouble...I only have yesteryear Uncle Mikes duty holders for speedloaders. Saving up to get open-top spring-loaded one of these days if I get to start shooting more again..Feels good to run my favorite gun and know it won't have a hitch...jams, failures to fire, lock-ups, sensitivity to ammo. Just don't try to put .30-06 in it and it's good...LOL

I still want the AP38 four-legged version like the .22 caliber version SubGunFan shows in other post but this one is for quick portability...throw in with the rest of the gear kind of days. Worked fine though. Mine is the SS6038
Re: S&W 686 4" and good day at range

I had Gunsmith Inc. years ago replace S&W red insert with bright orange 3 days after I bought in April 1991. Meaning, of course, a 686-3 with solid rail/ramp. With the Pachmayr Signature Grippers on 1 week after purchase she doesn't care what she shoots...Almost talked out of this 4" 3 times...no way...
Eaglestroker...hard to find good one for sale these days...by that I mean they'll take quite a licking but folks tend to hold'em. I just finished cleaning a few minutes ago which has always been habit:
Tip: If you ever get one or have a .38 you ever lead up in front of forcing cone-J. B. and or the Lyman Lead Remover works good but I don't use them now...when at range as today the .38s did it a little and then I fired some old .357 158g LSWC from C. R. Inc who used to sell at local shows. I always have 6 110g or 125g SJHP or softpoint .357 for the end. My technique is simply to fire 2-brush couple times-fire 2 brush then patch either dry or solvent quickly...fire other 2...borelight barrel...gun clean. Standard cleaning when get to-no problem.
Volzfan...glad you got yours back...

xd357...Keep that one...I had the 2 1/2" barrel and well...you know. Pachmayrs...bright orange front sight.
Re: S&W 686 4" and good day at range

Took her out again today to see if she still works... Shooting some CCI Blazer(alum case) 158g LRN .38Spc. Nothing like that round in a 686. Good practice for shooting .22lr... :rotflmao: At 21ft she's a 1/2" hole. Gotta start working either hand again. I'm too out of practice with the left hand...
Re: S&W 686 4" and good day at range

A quick Midway video and an order later and my 686-3(Donna) wears a new rear sight blade circa last night. After a good cleaning she's ready for next range date...could be today. I had to rig support but I picked up a new set of punches yesterday to make sure I had one to stake the windage nut.
Re: S&W 686 4" and good day at range

By the way the sights are more gray now instead of the old grooved white outline. I guess that's the new holding company way of doing things these days. The sight blade came direct from S&W.
