This beauty is on Gunbroker right now. I’ve never even heard of the Model 50. Anyone know anything about them? Looks like a 36 with adjustable sights. But some 36s came with adjustable sights too, right? Is it just a square butt version of the 36? Blued version of the Model 60?

Item number is 781838313 if anyone wants to try their luck.

Well Joe S. The current bid shows $496.00 I went to $525.00 Nope $535.00 Nope so they can keep it! That is what I don't like about that site. They show current bid but then the actual bid is much higher. I think they are trying to run it up!! Nice but not that nice!!

That's a nice, rare one. I won't be surprised if it hits $1200.

No popo 22lrfan???? I thought about putting 1k but thought better of it!! Is that normal for them not to show the highest bid?
Randy... I'll reply to your question here... and the answer is "yes". It's showing "proxy" bid amounts. GB only increments up to the next highest bid level amount when such "proxy" bids are entered. Therefore the results you encountered when bidding are experienced. In such cases, you must continue with successive bids until your bid exceeds the current "winning" proxy bid.

Waiting to see what 22lrfan says, however... :)

The "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" by Supica and Nahas, 3rd Edition, copyrighted in 2006 estimates a value (then) of $850 - ANIB, $600 - Exc, and $450 - VG. That's purely a "reference guide" to go by in establishing actual "value" and "worth".

The statement made by the seller in his GB listing, which can be seen here...

Smith Wesson Mod 50 CHIEF SPL TARGET 38 Rare ANIB - Revolvers at GunBroker.com : 781838313

and in the link provided by our OP, Joe S., is copied and pasted below in a quote...

"Notes: This ultra-rare “J” frame target revolver is one of only 568 ‘Model 50’ marked Chief Special Target’s produced and was mfd. in 1973. It virtually as new and comes complete in the original Bangor Punta blue box with all the papers & tools."

This applies only to 1973 production of the Model 50 or the otherwise .38 Chiefs Special Target revolvers of all years while in production; of which many were stamped as a Model 36... according to the Supica and Nahas book.

Their words are quoted below...

"50 (1973): 568 manufactured in serial number range 930J45 - 936J19."

The GB seller reveals a s/n of: 934 J81; this is well within that range.

Supica and Nahas also noted this information...

"36 (1965 - 1975): Stamping of model number 50."
It's safe to conclude that the .38 Chiefs Special Target was also made in other years than 1973 and marked as a Model 50.

The .38 Chiefs Special Target is said by Supica and Nahas to have been manufactured from 1955 until 1975.

S&W released a limited run of this revolver with a 3" full-lug barrel in 1989.
