The 340 was a decent rifle and chambered in the popular .30-30, it had a certain cult following, though probably less so than the Remington 788. Even if you have a complete receiver (receiver, bolt, trigger, magazine), I'd bet that you would have little chance of buying the rest of the parts needed to assemble it at a price that would be less than a complete rifle...and that's assuming that you have the expertise to headspace the barrel, fit the stock, etc., yourself. But it could be an interesting experiment...keep us informed if you go ahead with it.

Vick pretty much nailed it, IMO. I'd add that if you don't have a magazine, price them. Sure, they are plentiful, so there is telling what you _might_ find, but... If it were me and there was no particular reason to complete it in any hurry, I'd just keep my eyes out for parts (maybe set up an alert on eBay if you do eBay) and see what turns up.

Yea it’s no rush I’ve had it a few years and just thought I’d finally start on it. I doubt I’ll be able to build it and ever make any money on it, I’m just doing it for a project.
I'd say that is about accurate, re: cost of rebuild v. selling price. I've owned a 30/30, a .223 and a .222 as well as numerous 788s (including a .44 Mag) and while the Savages are decent enough rifles, it really isn't a good enough rifle to be highly sought after for its abilities nor nice enough to be sought for its aesthetics, so about the only folks looking for them are niche collectors/shooters and those looking for a decent inexpensive rifle. Those factors rarely add up to "good investment" insofar as putting much money into those types of firearms.

I refurbished one several years ago. A friend left it with me for a week. I wanted to buy it.

I have a lot of things going on right now, but I will think about it and see if I can locate some parts.
A little advice from what I have learned working on old guns, and bringing a partial old gun back to life. The cheapest way to go is, to find another 340 that someone has abused or broken or found in a barn etc. You can take the two broken guns and build one gun. For instance; this afternoon I located a bolt assembly for this gun. They want 149.99. You can buy a gun with a broken stock that is rusted for maybe 50 bucks or better yet free to take it.
