i've been thinking about another short bolt gun in 308.

I think i want iron sights and scout rail like my Gunsite had, but not sure i want the Ruger again with those expensive rattly mags.

I am considering the Mossberg for the AR mags, but the laminate stock they use is BULKY!! Maybe the synthetic is trimmer?

I looked at the Savage but those mags looked expensive too, altho that rifle felt as good as the Ruger to me.

The Ruger is appealing because they offer it with a wood stock now. But those mags.... Altho the plastic mags arent as rattly or expensive.

I am also considering just getting the American Ranch in 308 and settling for the smaller cap rotary mags, because it feels so good in the hands.

    Anything I'm missing?

Poor man's scout, about equivalent or equal to the 308. No mag stripper clips.

    ;)

Joe, the Ruger 77 compact has a scout rail but no detachable mag. I have a couple you can try if you come to one of the next 2 meet and greets.

I'm plagued with a weak left "lazy eye" that prevents me from doing as so many
recommend, shooting with both eyes open, for me I just get a double image just
a bit out of focus on one, gets mentally confusing. The scout concept as Cooper
advocated just makes it totally impossible for me to see anything regardless of
the eye relief of the optic but they're fun for those who can use them and I've
managed to hit what I aim at with the one eye only whether its game or a
    paper target.

I love my Ruger GSR. I only have the one rattly metal mag that came with. The rest are plastic and I like them just fine.

We both like S&W revolvers, 1911s and modifying Mosins...separated at birth?

The Scout rails on the compacts use Ruger rings dont they? I'd probably prefer the GSR over that. Thanks.

I liked the Savage scout rifle i looked at at Vans the other day but that mag looked like it's their design which could means hard to find and expensive. I liked how it felt. Didn't care much for the sights tho. It uses a Williams rear sight like the H&R buffalo Classics, and while it works, it seems like a rear sight on that type of rifle should be more ruggged.

I shoot with both eyes open regardless of the gun. I just like the way the rifles look.
