Sd9ve vs glock 19

418 Views 28 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  onlymaroonmatters
I'm stuck between choosing between the glock 19 and sd9, I like both and both are similar but it will be my first handgun to use for home defense and tuck and target shooting. I like the SW because it's made in USA but I know you cannot go wrong with with a glock. But is the glock worth the extra $200-$250?

I faced a similar decision when I bought my first defensive handgun. I was torn between the SD40VE and a Glock 22. Ultimately, I convinced myself that I could spend the extra $200 on ammo. I kept the Smith for many years and had no issues with it. I did end up putting an Apex trigger kit in it to lighten the 8lb trigger pull but, other than that, it was a sweet shooting, accurate pistol. You cannot go wrong with a Smith.

However, the G22 stayed in the back of my mind as the gun I wished I’d bought and, when the right deal came along, I bought a nice gen4 G22 from a fellow member and sold my SD40VE. Did I need to do that? Certainly not because of performance. It was more about wants.

it’s a tough choice but, at the end of the day, it comes down to finances and preference. I guess my point here is a) there is no bad choice and b) there is no long term commitment here. Unlike your wife, you can trade guns without taking a financial bath 😎

Good luck with your decision and purchase.

I've got a SD9VE that I use for my "car" gun. I paid like $175 used at a pawn shop. For it's intended purpose, it works great.

Of course the G19 and the SD9VE aren't really in the same league - like comparing apples to oranges. The Glock is more comparable to Smith's M&P series.

However, with the plethora of Glock clones on the market today (with fully interchangeable parts) from PSA, Polymer 80, etc., I don't know how Glock stays in business. You're really just paying for the name. I'd suggest looking hard at the PSA Dagger.
G19 hands down. No question. Look for a good trade in gen 3. If I could only have one handgun that would be it.
Like mentioned above look at the daggers. Or what I think is a better gun out of the box

The Glock is absolutely worth the extra money. In my nearly 4 years at my current job I've seen about 30+ SD9/SD40's come back for repairs, some obvious user error, some just poor workmanship and quality control. I've sent only 1 Glock back and that was one a guy ran over with his bush hog and Glock fully replaced the gun and now has it framed in an office. The Glock was still in "safe" firing state mechanically speaking.

The SD triggers are somewhere between 8-12 lbs, the Glock trigger for all people give it grief has anywhere from a 5 1/4 to 4 3/4 lb trigger typically, about the same as you'd get if you upgraded the SD with an Apex trigger. Glock aftermarket support and parts far outshine the SD. This doesn't make the SD a bad gun, but they have gotten out of their price point's value. If going cheap, get a Taurus, it'll serve you better. But this is your life and I can't tell you what you feel it's worth but mine is worth the extra money. Because when everything is riding on the line and I need every advantage in my corner I know for sure that the Glock will work when I need it most.

Actual conversation with a guy at work, many years ago, who had been pistol shopping.
Person: I just picked up my first Glock.
Me: Oh cool, which one did you decide on.
Person: The SD9
Me: Oh... That's not a Glock, that's a Smith and Wesson but still a nice little piece.
Person: Same thing.
Me: No it's not....

Glock Glock Glock Glock

Buy the Glock and thank us later. 🤣

Seriously consider holster options and compatibilities. There’s a reason Glock makes the same no frills stuff over and over and over. It’s actually many reasons but one main reason. It works! It took me some years to come around to it. I always thought of myself is too cool or too smart to follow the crowd. Truth is I’m neither.

If you don’t buy a G19 buy it build a clone, you will probably like it better anyways.

I have really enjoyed the Combat armory frame I took some sand paper and a dremel to the texturing on the side panels and backstrap because I conceal mine and I like my bellybutton hair just the way it is, but it’s been great and works with G19 specific holsters.
Glock. Don’t waste you’re money on the other
If you budget allows, go with the Glock. The SD9s I've shot, worked, but they all had poor triggers. The designs are similar enough I believe Glock sued S&W over patent infringement. If you take the S&W slide off and set it next to a glock they are identical. You will have way better holster availability and parts availability with Glock the same goes with magazine prices.

You didn't ask this but take a good look at Tisas 1911 pistols. I paid less than $450 in my hands for my stainless forged 45 carry. Now, I've put some more $$$ in the pistol but that was personal wants, not the items the gun needed.

Like Glocks the upgrades/better pieces are many and it's just plain fun to modify the 1911s to what you want in a pistol.

Between the two, the Glock is definitely worth the extra money. SD9 is a decent gun if you are on a strict budget but, as others have mentioned, it has a lot of drawbacks. Hard to find a holster. The trigger is HORRIBLE. Zero resale value if you ever want to get rid of it or trade up to something else.

If your budget is tight, look for a used Glock.
Neither get a S&W M&P

I’d go with the a Glock 19. A clone, such as a PSA Dagger, MAY be as good, but I’d feel better if it was a Glock.

The Combat Armory frame build that I snagged form @BladeZealot has left everyone who’s finger banged it grinning like **** eating dogs. 500 rounds deep and it’s been flawless.

Most clones run into holster compatibility issues. Internally they should all run fine, because of their internal compatibility. The barrels have a wide array of price points so I would expect accuracy will vary in similar fashion.

If for no other reason then the trigger buy a glock.

What, 11# too much? 😂
I purchased a SD40VE a number of years back. Absolutely the worst trigger I've ever experienced on a gun. Not only was it extremely heavy but had very gritty feel as well. I shot others with triggers better than the one I had but still terrible -- imo. Between the two, hands down I would go with the glock. Personally, if cost is a big factor, you might consider others. I recently purchased a Taurus G3c that I like and it has a very good trigger. To all -- have a GREAT and BLESSED day!!!
