This might be directed to Cliff, but others are welcome to provide insight as to what is needed to start competing in USPSA. Most will probably want to start in Production Class, so what type of gun, how many mags, and what kind of rig is recommended?
Thanks,

I'll put in my 2 cents. Go to the USPSA website for some good info. In production class you can run 10 round mags, stock gun for the most part, no speed holsters. You will need at least 3 mags and 5 or 6 are pretty common. Some of the courses of fire called stages have 32 rounds that's if you don't miss. This is a points vs. time game so your accuracy is much more important than how fast you are. You would be well to find a USPSA sanctioned club and go out and see how you like it or what class you may want to shoot in. I started out with a Beretta 96 .40 cal with 10 round mags, moved to a Para LDA and settled on a Para P16-40 that I shoot in Limited class, which allows hi-cap mags, speed holsters and mods to the pistol. Check out the Mobile pistol shooters club, they shoot 2nd & 4th Sat's above Citronelle, Al. Good bunch of guys & gals.

For what's its worth I'm thinking about trying the production class out maybe with just a few things (recommended by Cliff) to be done to a new Glock 17. A complete rig from Action Shooter Supply, (belt, holster and 4 mag holders) will set you back about $250..

Basically you can go play the game for about $1000....Not that bad for a new hobby....

I imagine ammo is the issue for a while after the initial expense

Just my 2 cents

encore i thought you could run factory high cap mags in production?? I normally stick to single stack with my kimber plus there is only like one or two other people playing in that class = ) You know I had all this work done to my glock to run limited and I just dont enjoy shooting it :tears: I thought maybe with some mods it will perform like i want it to but it aint. I am going to give it a hew hundred more rounds but if i still dont like it yal may see it in the gun for sale section

wow that kinda blows
Well..not really. Here's why:

My CZ SP-01 Shadow holds 19 +1 with factory mags. You MUST use factory mags in Production. A Glock 17 holds 17+1. Some makes of Production class guns hold 15+1, and, even less.

The reason for the 10+1 limit is that it levels the playing field, capacity wise. Some USPSA stages are high in round count, and 1 or 2 extra can make the difference in placement. Also, having to perfect a reload is part of the challenge in Production class.

It's (Production) my favorite divison in USPSA...the only one I shoot. It's less of an equipment race than the others, with the exception of Revolver.

When't the next competition at Magnolia in Byram or do they ever do that? I'd like to watch. May like it and if so like 'Neck said, $1000 ain't bad to get into a hobby.
How many rounds fired do you average at a meet? Do they drop the mags on the ground like some of the shows I've seen. Would hate to drop mags on the ground unless someone else (sponsor) was paying for them.

The next IPSC match at Magnolia is Sunday (8/2). To shoot, get there by 8 AM. To watch, get there at 9 AM.

Yes, they drop mags on the ground (grass & dirt, not concrete) so nothing is "hurt". IPSC is not IDPA (where you are sometimes required to pocket spent mags).

Come watch a match......... No charge to watch (and ask questions). However, please don't get discouraged by seeing the "speed demons" in action. Shoot at your own pace and MAINLY... do not miss the targets. You can't MISS fast enough to do well.

IPSC matches are FUN handgun competitions. The course of fire is different at each match. Go and shoot, and have fun, and learn to shoot your handgun better (under a little stress). Just don't go thinking you will win...... Your "winning" is the new experience you get. And too.... DON'T be held back by seeing the "speed demons". If you desire to reach that level of shooting, then practice, practice, practice..... If you just want to shoot to get better (more comfortable) with your handgun, then match competition is the best place to start.

You will never know if you don't try.................

I'm gonna give it a try in the am...I'll be slow as molasses!

...BTW the start up costs are just a little more than planned....

The mag holders are a little pricey ($35 each x 5) and I had to have 4 more Glock 17 mags for a total of 6

Belt, Bladetech holster, 5 mag pounches and 4 Glock 17 mags was $411...all from Action Shooters Supply....Nice Folks BTW...They are here at Magnolia this weekend...I should be set for a while.

Glock 17 with 2 mags $500
Gunsmithing and parts $240
Belt, holster, 5 mag pouches and 4 extra mags $411

It will cost a newbie about $1200 to get "rigged" ($500 for new Glock)...unfortunately I still need to obtain a set of Rx shooting glasses and that aint gonna be cheap...Oh well...its the ammo cost that I'm concerned about LOL

On the 10 rds in the mag complaint...I like it...Use a Glock 17 round mag and only load 10...easier on the fingers on those tight Glock mags!

Hope the range is not too muddy Sunday am
