And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.”
Exodus 34:6

The repetition of God’s name here is striking. God is emphasizing his covenant name, and the repetition serves to focus Moses’ attention on God himself. God uses repetition later in the Pentateuch as well: “the LORD our God, the LORD is one” (Deuteronomy 6:4). After God says, “The LORD,” twice, he provides insight directly into his character. God is compassionate, gracious, forbearing, loving and faithful.

We can never put God in a neat little package. Sometimes people try to describe him as a benign and loving old man, or vilify him as a power-hungry warlord.

Neither portrayal fits the God who is beyond comprehension. We grow to know God the same way Moses did — by listening to what God tells us about his character.

The more we know about God, the more we’ll be moved to praise him, and the more we will be in shock and awe of him. Thankfully, he keeps telling us about himself. Moses was shown God and instantly responded in worship. Our response can be the same.

Help me, Lord, to respond to you …
