I spent Saturday with a really great guy who let me use his range to get my 45-90 dialed in for competition this fall. Truth be known, I didn't know I could shoot that well, but since I'd never tried, I guess the surprise was lost on me. And since my shooting isn't half as good as most of the folks I'll be competing against, I'm sunk from the beginning, but it's going to be fun to try.
Also, I found a great product for those who shoot black powder but prefer using the substitutes. It's from American Pioneer Powder, and after my first experience loading it, I am blown away. I shot the 50-90 yesterday to test the stuff, and my accuracy was better than I'd been seeing with black. Of course, it could be the very focused practice I had Saturday, but the APP did wonderfully well. A black powder measure set at 90 grains gave 73.8 grains of APP, and that was then poured down a 24" drop tube and topped off with the usual .06" card wad. The bullet was a Lyman 515-grain flat point cast of 1:20 and sized to .510. Lubricant was DGL.
APP claims that the rifle can be cleaned with plain water, so I used a jug containing one gallon of hot tap water, which I poured into a transmission funnel through the bore. I followed that with twenty swipes of dry patches, lubed the bore with Bore Butter and put the rifle back on the rack. All of APP's claims have proved true for me, so I'm a believer.
Methinks I have found my hunting load, since this shoots right to point of aim at a measured 100 yards. Can't beat that with a big hammer.
