I hope this is the right seciton, please move it according if it's not. Yesterday I picked up a firearm from a local forum member here and took a buddy along with me. On the way back he mentioned a range he goes to in Brooklyn, so we figured we'd stop by it. Long story short, we took a wrong turn and by the time we realized it we needed to head back to town as I had prior plans. He said he wasn't sure the name of it, as he usually just tags along with a family member. I am just wondering if anyone knows exactly where this range is and/or the name of it. Also can anyone go or do you have to be a member?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Hey CSeawell,

There is a range that is maintained by the US Forestry Service. It is located near Brooklyn near the Ash Nursery. Turn off Hwy 49 just before Black Creek and go into Brooklyn. Go to caution light. Go straight across the tracks and keep going straight. Come to a fork in the road, take the right fork. This is actually straight, but keep going. Go about another a mile, cross Black Creek then go another mile or so. Come to a stop sign. This is New York Road (gravel). Take a left and go about 3-5 miles and it is on the left. When you see a bunch of gravel pits, you are there. This is a public range as far as I know.

Now here is my disclaimer, I haven't been there in years and years and my directions are from memory. You can get directions from the US Forestry Service at:

DeSoto District Ranges, US Forest Service, P.O. Box 248, Wiggins, MS 39577.

That is exactly what I was looking for locrawlr. I just wanted to make sure this was indeed a legitimate range, as he was very fuzzy on the details himself. I already see the mistake we made. At the fork we took a left instead of going "right". (Straight.)

I used to shoot there pretty often when I lived in hattiesburg. It's a public range with no range officers present. The condition of the range varies, but it's usually in pretty poor condition (target stands shot up, shooting bench destroyed, litter etc.). If there is someone already shooting on it I strongly recommend observing their safety practices before you decide to unload your equipment, you might decide to just leave instead. I've been their quite a few times and seen some of the worst safety practices ever, once I even saw some guys shooting their beer cans right after they finished drinking them.

Seawell,

The name of the range is 'Black Creek Shooting Range' on the Desoto National Forest map that I have. I was just there yesterday. The bench is still intact, but you will need to bring your own target stands. It's a little over 100 yds long. If you have a GPS, the coordinates are 31.0218N, -89.1293W.

I agree with Nothing above about folks and safety. Sometimes I just drive on by because there are too many folks there. Yesterday was not too bad except for three guys that came up to sight in a couple rifles. They had a teenage boy that would run the targets out for them. Sometimes they would warn me and sometimes I would just have to see him running out there. Also, me and my daughter would take our ear muffs off while changing targets. But we had to watch them carefully because when they got ready to shoot, they would just pull the trigger with no warning :affraid: (they weren't wearing any ear protection). And whatever they were shooting was LOUD! They were not considerate at all and we were proud to see them leave.

There are good folks that come out, too. We've enjoyed many who look out for each other and actually clean up their mess before leaving. I try not to go on weekends, except maybe early on a Sunday morning. You can't beat the price, and it's only about 15 miles or so for me.

Thanks for the heads up. I was afraid it may be a setup similar to that, but I will still be checking it out soon. Like you, it's not so far away that I won't hesitate to just turn around if I feel uncomfortable. I'm just glad that there is a range somewhere nearby to shoot at.

How much $$$?
Welcome to MSGO...This thread is a bit old, but if the question is how much does it cost to shoot at the forestry range in Brooklyn, the answer is free.

Open every day sunup to sundown. We are planning a Meet and Greet there (and the Ash Lake facility) at the end of next month. Info here: http://www.msgunowners.com/t43569-9-28-13-mini-meet-and-greet-new-info-posted

I want to ride over and look at it soon. If it is dirty maybe we as a group could reach an agreement with The Forestry Dept and if we could keep it clean maybe get a discount to Ashe Lake for our M&G. Just a thought.

I have never seen it clean. But its the only place around I have to shoot. I always clean up my mess but others don't do so. If enough people come maybe we can make a sweep down the lane and clean it a little. I bet The Forestry Dept would give us a year pass (its durty!)

I agree, the place is trashed. I remove my trash, and usually a few other pieces as well with every visit. Yeah, it can be almost a free for all when there's a few people there, so I usually skip on by or pack up when it starts filling up.
