I don't like break open CF rifles. The bolt action variety are much safer. You can buy a reasonably priced adult rifle and drill two - 1/4" holes in the butt. Then cut off the buttstock and add a recoil pad. Then as the shooter grows, you can easily reattach the severed buttstock by using epoxy and 1/4" wooden dowels to line up the pieces. I did this to a Remington 511-P .22 rf rifle for my Daughter and the re-attached buttstock looks fine.

I like Dougs idea a whole lot better

+1

Start your kid out with a good bolt with decent optics...no reason to go cheap cause He's young...buy something He can use his whole life...stocks are pretty inexpensive as opposed to all the time you'll spend buying them several throw away rifles and glass...plus I personally think 223 sucks as a deer caliber....

A 7mm-08 is or a 260 Remington is just about perfect for a kid...and these rounds will kill anything that moves in MS.

They gotta learn to deal with recoil sooner or later...strap it on and deal with it

I have a Mauser 98 in .243 Winchester. I have let a slightly built neighbor boy use it with his Father for deer hunting. Recoil is not a problem and it kills deer like lightning with a 100 gr Hornady reload,

agrees with doug. well kinda. i love my encore

maybe my dad was just different but i never owned anything "youth" as a little fella. Growing up my dad shot a nam era M40 sniper rifle. that thing was heavy as all get out and would stomp my butt every time i pulled the trigger, but that was what i shot when me and dad went hunting. I think i was 12 when i started hunting solo and dad got me a pre64 M70 in 243win an that was my go to gun for the next 14 years.

fyi. i shot a syn 223 about 4-6 years ago and it almost made me cry. i dont know if i was just holding it wrong or it hit a nerve but it felt like someone shoved a knife through my shoulder!

well the 243 wssm has been dropped by every company except for browning(does winchester still offer it?) last time i priced a browning abolt 243wssm it was about a grand
browning doesnt make them anymore either, dropped for the .223 wssm, which ive heard is about the same but never shot one, i got a browning .243 wssm on sale last year for around 500. to me they are worth searching for. extremely hard to find used b/c once someone gets a holt of one they dont wanna let it go. i LOVE mine!!!!

The .223 Rem can make a pretty good deer rifle if you load 63 gr Speer SP or 60 gr Hornady HP bullets. I have seen deer struck with these bullets and they did not go far. But I would prefer a .243 Winchester even to a .243 WSSM. The ammo for the WSSM is over $1.00 per round and there is no telling when the ammo companies might drop the round in factory ammo.

well brass aint that hard to make from 300 wsm cases. granted those dont just grow on trees but they are cheaper. looked really hard at the 243ssm but you only get "maybe" a 10% gain over a regular 243win so it puts it in the same ball park as a 243AI.. one thing to think about is when a 6mm bullets starts pushing 4000fps barrel life nose dives like World Com stocks...

I have a ruger m77 in .243 win. I'm contemplating just getting the stock cut to fit him. His little brother can use it when he gets old enough as well.
Like Beladran said...when I was kid..there wasn't youth JACK sh!t....You strapped it on like a man...no matter how small you were...we survived quite well....Think I was about 10 and weighed 40 lbs when I pulled the hammer on a big 12 Ga...I got off on it...just depends on how you view things....LOL

Now you r headed in right direction...cut that stock..put some decent glass on it...I like Nikon Monarch in a moderately priced hunting scope...you don't really need a 50 mm Obj...40's are good.

Them Bushnell Tactical Elite 4200's are good for the money spent on em...

U Know...you really should have gotten this done during the summer...Its time to hunt now!

when you get tired of the 243 Win...get it re-chambered in 260 Remington and fall in love :lol3:

I hear ya. He's only 7 and somewhat slender. His LOP is just around 9" or so. I already know how tough he is with all the stuff he has been through in his young life. He damn sure doesn't have to prove anything to me. The last thing I want to do is make hunting or shooting into something he hates. I didn't even shoot a cf rifle til I was 10 or 11. I started out hunting with a .410. I have been seriously considering the .223. I have seen too many dead deer killed by it. There are some mean bullets for it these days. I'll probably stick with the .243 though. One thing I've seen is that all kids are different when it comes to when they are ready to hunt or shoot a certain gun. Some of these kids are killing deer, hogs, and turkeys at 5 years old. Unreal. I was about as rowdy as they come when I was a kid and I was alot older than that before I started putting meat on the table. I'll post pics of the final project when I get through.

Have you thought about just replacing the stock with a youth model for the time being? If you can find a used one, I'm sure you could pick it up for pretty cheap.
Problem is, most youth stocks are just 1" or so shorter in LOP. The little youth model rossi is too long for him. He can put the butt against his shoulder and still reach the trigger, but his arm is stretched out way further than it needs to be and his left hand can't reach the forearm like you would want it to. He can still shoot, but I suppose it's like people with small hands shooting a fat gripped double stack .45 acp. You know, not really a comfortable shooting position. We'll work it out.
