First time ever. Verified the ffl was legit. She delivered an unfired pistol to the end buyer. Now they say I need to send my D.L. I tried to scan and send it but our email security won't let you send a .pdf file to a gmail account. The FFL got up on her high horse and said she'd get the ATF on me. In my opinion, she should have turned it down without a copy of my MS D.L. before turning it over to the guy to shoot. I tried to contact them today to get a fax number but never heard back. The end buyer is a nice enough guy but she is a B...., threatened to send the gun back, which would be fine but I'm not taking an unfired pistol back that's been shot at the same price as I sold it. Wanted her by the fax machine when I sent the fax, don't want my D.L. info sitting out for just anybody to see to steal my ID when I do fax it to her.
Question, is there any info I can blacken out when I do fax it to the FFL?
Done deals with several of you guys, some FTF and some through an FFL with no problems. I think she knows she screwed up and wants to shout me down. She doesn't give me that fax number, I think I will call the ATF myself. I don't see anywhere you have to send a copy of your D.L.
End of rant.

Its pretty common for a FFL to request a copy of your D.L. for their records...I don't think they do anything with it cept file it away...course if the ATF asks them to produce it...They will have to

U are a glutton for punishment...thinking about calling the atf....I'd rather be tied to an ant hill and have honey poured on me....

I'd try to get another FFL here to work out the details with your friendly out of state dealer...maybe she'll work with one of them better....

Good Luck with it

Every online deal I've done(buy only) the seller has had to have a copy of DL. Yes she screwed up by accepting it without a copy of the DL. She really screwed up by letting the buyer shoot the gun.

My two cents.

As someone that works for a licensed dealer, I can tell you the DL is common practice when coming from a private owner. I personally wouldn't worry about blacking out any information when sending it. I may be able to provide you the phone number of a former or current ATF agent that should be able to help you out. If you'd like it, send me a PM and I check on that number tomorrow while in the office.

I have only bought 2 handguns online and didn't have to send a copy of my DL for either.

I sent a gun to an FFL in Florida for a third party there. I requested a copy of the FFL and shipped the gun to the FFL's address (after payment received). End of transaction with no problems. No DL required.

I would not submit my DL #. I would give my name, address and phone though. Hell, a gun that is "lost" (not current in the system due to private sale(s)) is now back in the system (via FFLs).

Sid, did you ship to the FFL's address? Or the third party's address? ONLY ship to the FFL.

I believe the issue in question is that the seller (private owner) of the firearms has to provide the DL to the FFL dealer the buyer is using, not the buyer of the firearm.

Lane, guess she rubbed me the wrong way. If she'd just asked in a civil manner instead of talking down to me and jumping down my throat, I'd been ok. She was the one who threatened to sic the ATF on me when I was trying to come to a way to settle the thing where everyone was happy and legal.
Dan, I called the ATF to verify the FFL and the ship to address were legit.

My understanding of the process is that the FFL has to put the gun in their books than can they sell it to the buyer. Thus needing your DL, without it they can't do that.

I could be wrong but this was how it was told to me.

you bought not sold. Your seller should have included a copy of their DL with the gun. You only had to produced your DL for your FFL.

Thanks XD. I told her this was the first time I had sold a gun to someone who was not FTF. I asked kindly if there was any info I could blacken out to keep someone from stealing my ID, since as I told her anyone who had a hand on it pretty much has everything but my Social. She jumped down my throat and told me she'd send the gun back to me among other threats. Sad part is the buyer is a really good guy and I hate having him drug into this. He sent me emails saying how much he liked the gun and how long he had been looking for one just like it. May have been a bad day for her but don't take it out on me. I did everything I could to make sure she was a legit FFL and everything was on the up and up. All in all, could have been handled without all the attitude in a lot nicer way for everyone.

Well, since I couldn't scan and email it to her (don't have a scanner and email security won't allow a .pdf file to go to a gmail address). Anyway, called her today and she was much nicer. Copied my DL and faxed it to her. She couldn't read it and just told me to give her the info over the phone. B..... changed her attitude today when she got a crummy ID. Figured she'd want me to send another but she just wrote down the info. Why do women (not all) have to drag stuff out for days.
