I have a friend who is wanting to get his grand children a good starter gun for deer only and asked me about the Savage Axis. I told him I would have to ask the pros as I know nothing about the Axis. Anyone have any input?

I bought my nepher a Stevens 200 in 243.. It is an adequate deer gun. The fit and finish is not the best, and the trigger pull is a little tight, but it will do the job.

I bought a Savage Edge (they later changed the name to Axis) in .223 back in January. I haven't shot it yet so I can't really comment too much about it. Dry firing it the trigger was really heavy. Since Midway had a Timney trigger for it on sale last month I went ahead and, uh, pulled that trigger. The barrel free floats, but the stock seems not near as stiff as I would like. Don't know if a replacement 110 stock will fit it or not.

It was $259 at Academy. So even with the $85 trigger group I expect the fun factor to way exceed the cost.

Terry, nobody makes a replacement stock for the Axis because the recoil lug is attached to the stock and not the gun. If you wanted to stiffen the stock, you could cut away some of the molding if the forearm, put an old arrow in there and cover that with JB weld. There are some posts on some forums on how exactly to do that. This is the reason that allot of people go with the Stevens instead of the Axis because of the aftermarket availability but for 259 you couldn't go wrong.

My choice for a Starter Gun

I have 5 children. The oldest 3 are hunting regularly. I have started all three out on a H&R Handirifle, 243. I picked up a youth model and they have all done great with it. Another advantage to this rifle is as they kids grow you have other barrel options through the barrel accessory program. You may also buy an adult stock later on as well to lengthen it as the children grow.
