Like the title says. Post some words of gunsmithing wisdom that you've picked up along the way

I'll start. Browning A5s are the devil. Belgiuns should stick to making waffles. Springfield XDs should never be disassembled. If the ever stop functioning just throw them in the trash

I can strip my XD down to bare frame no problem. Just takes some careful maneuvering and special tools for the springs.

Erma m1/22 as well as Iver Johnson M1/22 -you'll need about five hands to get it back together if taken down beyond point for routine cleaning. Keeping that flip'in ejector in place while maintaining op rod alignment while trying to keep bolt in place and trying to slide everything into the receiver- had to walk away or throw away. Got back to it a month later with rubber bands and scotch tape. I still think there may be some tape holding that [email protected] ejector in there.

Don't forget to hold your buffer retainer pin when you remove the buffer tube on your AR. That think can put an eye out. I've still got one hideing in my 4runner somewhere.
Your extension tube is not screwed in far enough (or damaged)......... Retaining pin should not come out.

Just what I was thinking. Should be captive if properly assembled in the first place.

Lt Dan you have my humble respect. Be honest though. How many four letter words did you say the first time you tried it?
haha there was quite a few. There is a tool from pistol gear for the ejector I copied and a few other spring holders make it easier. And after having to refer to a few diagrams it got easier.

First time I ever fully disassembled a Mauser bolt I thought I had REALLY f***ed up.

I sat and fiddled with it awhile, and after copious cussing finally got it back together.

Mauser bolts are like riding a bicycle....... Once you learn, it is EASY there after............

Now, I need to keep Lt. Dan on speed-dial for my XD....... :)

the buffer tube holds the pin and spring in right? And if you unscrew the tube the pin comes out. I haven't seen anything that should hold the pin in besides the tube.

Why are you unscrewing the buffer tube (extension tube)....?

Oooops..... Sorry. I just re-read your post. I thought you said buffer, but you did say buffer tube. YES, when you start unscrewing the buffer tube..... keep a finger on the retaining pin. Or you will also be looking under Sigma's 4-runner for yours.............. :)

I only completely disassemble mine a few times a year so I dont wear the polymer out, I'm scared of that for some reason. But I take the slide completely down every time I clean and I just pulled the frame apart because of the PRP sear and spring kit and striker. The trigger springs are niiiiiice but I'm thinking about a complete trigger upgrade. And I just got new sights, the stockers were ridiculous to get out. Let me know and I will tear it down/clean/ repair it for ya anytime free of cost.

Opp,s where did that spring go.Go slow, and if you run into a brick wall, take a break and usually when you come back, you can figure out how to get it back together. You can never have too many extra springs in your shop.Have an open mind and listen to experts, they have probably been there and have an easier way to do it. Don,t be satisfied until you get it right. Treat every gun as if it were your Son,s or Gran Dad,s. I have had more problems with old 22 autos that jam than any other type of guns that I have worked on.
