I just wanted to get some fellow thoughts on getting a gun "Ported". Honestly for us Glock Owners, does this really seem like something that should be considered? I’ve been a Glock Owner for almost 2 years (sadly I’ve NEVER shot it!) and I’m looking forward to getting gin some range time this year. Now that I’m married and a home owner looks like I will be around for a while.

Judging by the article here “Porting” the gun seems to help with “rise” that the Glocks are evidently known for (I did not know this). Do any of you have your Glock or Pistol ported”

porting will help reduce muzzle rise or recoil BUT at a cost.
like jbpmidas said they are loud. Also if you plan to use your glock as a home defense/ daily carry you probably wouldnt want it ported because in low light/dark conditions the muzzleflash will impair your vision. There is a pic somewhere on here of a glock fired at dark that is ported and it looks like it breathing fire our the top of the slide. Cool pic but bet the shooter cant see sqat for a few minutes.

Most handgun porting is for comp guns to allow them to get back on target as fast as possible, porting keeps muzzlejump down allowing quicker target acquisition. In comps they have hearing protection on so the increased noise is not a concern.

I think Beladran has a ported caspian and may be able to offer additional information or rebuttal on the ported pistols noise, as i have no ported handguns i am not sure of the noise increase.

I would have to agree, also the sound of being blinded by your own gun in an emergency does not compute very well with me. I guess if I ever get into comp. shooting, which I hope I will, then I might consider something like this.

I shot a ported Glock .40, not sure which model, a few months ago. Between the crap spewing in my face, the noise(or so it seemed), and the filthy front sights, I am not a fan.

I would vote "no" for the reasons mentioned above on a self-defense gun, along with the fact that if there was a struggle for the gun and it needed to be fired from a "guard" or "retention" position near the body, you could end up with burns or worse if it spits bits of the jacket. Muzzle rise with a Glock isn't bad, especially considering their relatively light weight. Just get some practice time in regularly and you will be good to go in my opinion.

If you are interested in a match, even if it is just to watch or ask some questions, there is one this Sunday morning in Byram. More info is available here: www.teammagnolia.com or shoot me a PM. If the weather is nice (and I believe it is supposed to be), there should be a really good turnout with a wide variety of guns. A few will be in "Open" division and run compensators and some of those may be ported as well, but most of the competitors will be in one of other divisions that does not allow either.

I had a gen 1 Glock 23 for a long time. I got it ported, tritium night sights, extended mag release, etc, and it was really nice for practice due to the reduced muzzle flip. But, as others mentioned, it was louder, and in low light there's really a lot of flame shooting up -- would definitely have blinded me in a low light situation. I also noticed a little reduction in bullet velocities.

So I bought another factory barrel for it thinking I would keep it around as my home defense weapon. But then with the factory (non-ported) barrel in place, the thing shot really high above the point of aim. That was because the new sights were set up for use with the ported barrel.

So in summary, just be aware of the limitations of the ported gun, and if you can accept those limitations, you would probably enjoy it.

I think flash is more related to the particular powder and load than the ports themselves. With ports is obviously worse all things being equal, but they seldom are.

When they were shooting night matches in Poplarville, there was a wide variety of flashes from different loads, both factory and reloads. With the right load, there were compensated and ported "open" division guns that had less flash than non-ported service type guns shooting factory defensive rounds. It was surprising to say the least. Change powder and the open gun would light up the gravel pit with some pretty impressive fire ball flashes.

Bryant is right.

Muzzle flash is caused by unburned powder burning once the bullet has left the barrel. If you use a load where the powder is completely burned by the time the bullet leaves the barrel, there shouldn't be a muzzle flash.

In fact, in ported guns, the object is to force the expanding gas from the burning/burned powder through the ports in the compensator and keep the muzzle down. The best way is to use a load that completely burns the powder so that you don't end up "wasting" burning powder outside the compensator.

That's the best reason not to that I have read, and I agree wholeheartedly
