I said if I ever build another house -- that would be a must!! -- depending on the water table of course!!! -- More afraid of the bad storms we get than anything else ...

One thing I pipe in on, If there's a tornado you're naturally going to go to it. I was looking at one myself and saw that most people who owned a shelter and were hurt or killed were from flying debris so think about that when you pick your access spot.

There are videos on Youtube and photos on various survival forums like whenshtf.com where people have used containers or concrete pipe for underground shelter.
My next house will have some sort of underground room, not sure about the specs yet.
I did see a buried 20' container live and in person in Indiana. The guy dug a hole deep and wide enough to put 3-4' of riprap on the bottom and sides of the container. He plumbed in a sump pump to pump out the water. He built a "roof" over the container and poured concrete on it. Then he put 12" of top soil with sod on the "roof" which made the whole thing look like part of his yard. Inside the container was fixed up to be his reloading room and storm shelter with some supplies. The entrance was like any other storm shelter with a angled door and stairs going down. He wasn't thinking about opsec, just looking for space where he didn't have any. The inside was finished like a house...lights, heat, AC, very nice.

A friend and I have been discussing this topic very seriously the last few years.

His plan is to set his container in place on a concrete slab about half the container's height below grade, say in the side slope of a hill, and then form up around it and encase it in concrete. From there he would add dirt around the sides and on the top to increase the radiation shielding.

My plan is to locate it on a piece of property where an 8' wide trench can be cut through a hill or ridgeline of sufficient length and depth to pretty much center the container in it and cover it completely with dirt. Before covering I would shore the inside with small timber (like 4x4 posts and 4x6 stringers to support the roof, spaced about every 4' down the length of the container), and coat the outside heavily with mastic or some other heavy duty waterproofing material. Naturally I would French drain the long sides to drain out of either side of the hill/ridge.

Glad we've got some like-minded folks here on such topics.

That's some good info Brutus.
Thanks. Glad to be of help increasing the knowledge base on these sorts of topics.

I know this guy out in TX through another forum who is basically in the survivalist business named Shane Connor. His website has tons of good reading on the basics of radiation shielding and other related topics. He also sells refurbed, reliable rad meters, KI, and other stuff like chem detection cards like the military uses.

www.ki4u.com

He's a good guy to deal with if you want to buy from him and he's got a proven track record of furnishing good working equipment that you can trust.
