I have a neighbors dog that keeps coming in my yard. Looks to me like the the dog is a chow mix and I have a 2 year old little girl. I really don't want to start a war with the neighbors. I never see them and they dont have a phone for me to contact them to put the dog up. Need some info on maybe a less than lethal rimfire bullet, or maybe a pellet rifle. I have heard of rubber shotgun bullets but from what I have seen they may kill a dog. I just want to put him back across the road before something happens and I am forced to feed him buckshot.

Just a cheap little BB gun is usually all it takes .... a couple repeated incidents and the dog usually learns to stay away ...

I had a similar thing going on at my house for a while. I tried a regular old low power BB gun and that didn't seem to work. I then found a full auto airsoft gun at Bass Pro and after I lit him up with that thing a few times he stayed away for a while. I actually was able to talk to the dog's owners and they were uninterested in the matter. They basically said it was my problem. I live in the county so no leash laws or anything. My wife is an animal lover so I had to have some "humane" way of dealing with this issue and then I found it! A cheap paint ball gun. I sent him home one time with a little red, green and yellow decoration and he hasn't been back since. I realize that the paint balls can be dangerous so I only shot him in the butt. He's fine but stays home and these days the neighbors keep him chained when they aren't around. They weren't all that pleased with my solution but after all... they did put it in my court. Just a thought...

I get many drop offs by my place, especially after hunting season. I guess people think because you have some land you can care of their dogs.

The paint ball gun is the way to go, it works very well. Your not alone with this problem.
Beat me to it!

It is considered against the law to just fire on the dog without reason. Best thing you can do is try to chase the dog off without hurting it, but take a paintball gun in one hand and a real gun, be it a .45 or .22, in the other. If all else fails.... And the dog is really threatening to approach.... open your door, wait for the right moment the animal is turned around, and tag it in the ass once. He should take off in a trot!

The paint ball gun is a good idea if you want to invest in one. The BB gun is cheaper very effective, and quiet. If that doesn't work the next step might be one of the 1000fps. pellet rifles. The next step is a 22 subsonic load that will kill the dog. In some areas this will be illegal so make absolutely sure that can do this in your area. My local LEO told me that a dog in my yard that doesn't belong there presents enough of a hazard that I could take appropriate action to protect me and my family and dogs. Check with your local LEO to make absolutely sure you are warranted in taking that action so you don't end up in jail. You might even consider having them contact the owners since you have already tried that. Also keep a journal on what you have tried to do to solve this problem in a peaceful manner. This covers your backside should you end up in court.

I have 2 daughters and I have been attacked by a chow before, so I very much understand where you are coming from.

A 1000 fps pellet rifle could kill the dog. I have a 1100 fps Gamo that absolutely destroys small game. The pellet goes right through anything small like a rabbit or squirrel.

Please don't kill someones family pet in the front yard without very good cause. Just because it's a chow doesn't make it a dangerous dog.

I second approaching the owner and expressing concern for your child in YOUR yard. 4 legs or 2, trespassing is trespassing. Be friendly and use tact and hopefully they will be responsive.

If not....300-500 fps bb gun or paintballs. Daisy BB gun works good at my house controlling the random K9 trash raiders that invade at night. Aim for the legs. It hurts more because the coat is thinner, they seem to remember better that way. :D

I hope you can get it resolved with a chat. Look at it as a good way to break the ice and meet your neighbor.

BB gun or Paintball gun works well. I had an issue like this at my dad's in Gulfport. Neighbors dog was crapping on the front doormat. After 4 or 5 times and being told to F&*( off by the owner and getting the police involved, the problems was solved by Mr. Ruger 454. Definatly go the peaceful way first!

I use a Red Ryder BB gun. If it's a male dog I try to get a shot to his male parts, seems to work wonders. :D

I just say they were chaseing my horses and let'er bang, called the sheriffs dept. once about them chaseing my horses and they said that if a dog was after my horses i had the right to protect my livestock. BTW , as to the paint balls , freeze a few and you will have that mutts undivided attention.
