Trump: Iran 'Will Be Held Fully Responsible' After US Embassy in Iraq Attacked

As I recall, the "new" U.S. embassy there was a $1B-plus super-fortress. Or apparently not.

###

The U.S. Embassy in Iraq is being attacked by Iraqi Shiite militia supporters, who’ve broken into the compound.

According to the Associated Press, a fire has been set and sounds of gunfire were heard.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw flames rising from inside the compound and at least three U.S. soldiers on the roof of the main building inside embassy. It was not clear what caused the fire at the reception area near the parking lot of the compound. A man on a loudspeaker urged the mob not to enter the compound, saying: “The message was delivered.”

Smoke from the tear gas rose in the area, and at least three of the protesters appeared to have difficulties breathing.

The gate that was smashed was a side-entrance, one used by cars to enter the embassy compound. Hundreds of protesters had pushed about 5 meters (16 feet) into a corridor that leads to the main building but the protesters were still about 200 meters (yards) away from it. (AP)

...

The attack comes after the U.S. carried out airstrikes against five sites of Kataeb Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militia, in Iraq and Syria in retaliation for the killing of a U.S. contractor and injuries to four U.S. troops and two members of the Iraqi Security Forces.

Iraq condemned the airstrikes, calling them a “violation of Iraq's sovereignty” and the terrorists vowed to retaliate, with KH’s military commander reportedly saying their forces were “ready to destroy the bases of the American occupiers and crush their rotten heads.”

That was my first thought. Maybe there was a lot of "overhead" building that place; lots of rice bowls to fill; plenty of palms to grease.

Wasn't Hillary involved in building that new emba$$y. How much did the prime contractor send to her PAC?

Edit: Oops, sorry Hillary. Condi Rice was ambassador. We're good.

Posting for a friend, honest.

2008-present: New embassy[edit]
A new embassy was constructed along the Tigris River, west of the Arbataash Tamuz Bridge, and facing Al-Kindi street to the north. The embassy is a permanent structure which has provided a new base for the 5,500 Americans currently living and working in Baghdad. During construction, the US government kept many aspects of the project under wraps, with many details released only in a U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee report.[11] Apart from the 1,000 regular employees, up to 3,000 additional staff members have been hired, including security personnel.

With construction beginning in mid-2005, the original target completion date was September 2007. "A week after submitting his FY2006 budget to Congress, the President sent Congress an FY2005 emergency supplemental funding request. Included in the supplemental is more than $1.3 billion for the embassy in Iraq." An emergency supplemental appropriation (H.R. 1268/P.L. 109-13), which included $592 million for embassy construction, was signed into law on May 11, 2005. According to the Department of State, this funding was all that was needed for construction of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.[12] However, Walter Pincus of The Washington Post found that the new embassy had cost more than $700 million by 2012,[13] and Business Insider reported in 2013 that the cost of the embassy had surpassed $750 million.[14] The Obama administration requested more than $100 million for a "massive" upgrade to the embassy compound in 2012.[15] As of 2006, construction was being led by the Kuwaiti firm First Kuwaiti Trading & Contracting,[16][17][18]

First Kuwaiti Trading & Contracting - Wikipedia

First Kuwaiti Trading & Contracting, also known as First Kuwaiti Trading Company and FKTC, is a construction company that was contracted to build the Embassy of the United States in Baghdad in 2004. It was founded in 1996 by Wadih al-Absi and Mohammed Maaraf and has been used by the United States for over two hundred projects in Kuwait and Iraq.

"Very proud of President [Trump] acting decisively in the face of threats to our embassy in Baghdad. He has put the world on notice - there will be no Benghazis on his watch," [Sen. Lindsey] Graham tweeted.

"To the Iranian government: Be careful what you wish for — a country that depends on the ability to refine oil for its existence needs to be cautious.

President Trump, unlike President Obama, will hold you accountable for threats against Americans and hit you where it hurts the most. Choose your battles wisely."

"To our Iraqi allies:

This is your moment to convince the American people the US-Iraq relationship is meaningful to you and worth protecting.

Protect our American personnel. You will not regret it."

Why the Sam Hell do we have an embassy in that sh!thole place anyway?
You could say that about the 150+ sh!thole countries in the world where we have embassies and consulates.

I've not been to the U.S. embassy in Iraq, but I have been to/seen the new one (almost a fortress) in Kabul, Afghanistan … and yes, you can still ask me: why new, and why there.

IDK.

Update: 82nd Airborne troops in the air. Scrambled to Kuwait.

Excerpt:

Up to 4,000 US troops could deploy to Middle East amid Baghdad unrest: officials

The U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division’s alert brigade has been issued orders to deploy rapidly to Kuwait amid the unrest in Baghdad, three U.S. defense officials told Fox News on Tuesday.

At least 750 paratroopers are set to deploy to the region immediately, Defense Secretary Mark Esper said in a statement.

The alert brigade of roughly 4,000 paratroopers, known as the DRB -- the Deployment Ready Brigade -- has been told to prepare for a possible deployment in the days ahead after hundreds of Iranian-backed militiamen tried to storm the U.S. embassy in Baghdad Tuesday.

Within that alert brigade, three rifle battalions had a certain alert sequence, 18 hours, 36 hours and 54 hours for the third. The entire brigade had a 96-hour alert window to deploy.

Esper said that at President Trump's direction, "I have authorized the deployment of an infantry battalion from the Immediate Response Force (IRF) of the 82nd Airborne Division to the U.S. Central Command area of operations in response to recent events in Iraq. Approximately 750 soldiers will deploy to the region immediately, and additional forces from the IRF are prepared to deploy over the next several days. This deployment is an appropriate and precautionary action taken in response to increased threat levels against U.S. personnel and facilities, such as we witnessed in Baghdad today. The United States will protect our people and interests anywhere they are found around the world."

Some of the paratroopers already have left their base in Fort Bragg, N.C., to fly overseas in Air Force C-17 cargo planes, according to officials.

A nuke to/on Tehran would be easier, quicker, cheaper and more final. Come back in 10,000 yrs.

JMO, but that's why I'm not the president, SECDEF or SoS.
Coincidentally, Iran, China, & Russia just finished up some joint naval war games a few days ago. :hmm:

Can't spy, if don't have Stuff there to spy with.:yeah::confused:.
That ole adage " keep friends close, but Enemies closer.o_O.theory i guess.
Sun Tzu on spies ( modern tech helps, but is not sufficient of itself):

[13.05] What enables the enlightened rulers and good generals to conquer the enemy at every move and achieve extraordinary success is foreknowledge.

[13.06] Foreknowledge cannot be elicited from ghosts and spirits; it cannot be inferred from comparison of previous events, or from the calculations of the heavens, but must be obtained from people who have knowledge of the enemy's situation.

[13.07] Therefore there are five kinds of spies used: Local spies, internal spies, double spies, dead spies, and living spies.

[13.08] When all five are used, and no one knows their Way, it is called the divine organization, and is the ruler's treasure.

[13.09] For local spies, we use the enemy's people. For internal spies we use the enemy's officials. For double spies we use the enemy's spies. For dead spies we use agents to spread misinformation to the enemy. For living spies, we use agents to return with reports.

[13.10] Therefore, of those close to the army, none is closer than spies, no reward more generously given, and no matter in greater secrecy.

[13.11] Only the wisest ruler can use spies; only the most benevolent and upright general can use spies, and only the most alert and observant person can get the truth using spies. It is subtle, subtle!

[13.12] There is nowhere that spies cannot be used.

[13.13] If a spy's activities are leaked before they are to begin, the spy and those who know should be put to death.

[13.14] Generally, if you want to attack an army, besiege a walled city, assassinate individuals, you must know the identities of the defending generals, assistants, associates, gate guards, and officers.

[13.15] You must have spies seek and learn them. You must seek enemy spies. Bribe them, and instruct and retain them. Therefore, double spies can be obtained and used.

[13.16] From their knowledge, you can obtain local and internal spies. From their knowledge, the dead spies can spread misinformation to the enemy. From their knowledge, our living spies can be used as planned. The ruler must know these five kinds of espionage.

This is a serious, non-smart-as$ question. I thought an embassy was to maintain an open dialogue with the country it is in. There is no exchanging of thoughts and ideas with these animals.
