P1 = Pistole 1; first post-war pistol "authorized" by the western powers for the West German military to use; a P38 by pre-war designation. Good, solid 9mm NATO pistol, but with generally horrible DA trigger, so-so (luck of the draw) SA trigger; most I have seen were carried more than they were fired. To me the more interesting ones are those designated a "P1" for export by the German government which were in reality P38s captured from the Wehrmacht but used post-war by the Kasernierte Volkspolizei, barracks police, Germans armed for police work but kept in barracks in the Soviet Zone of Occupation( East Germany), which have the East German markings...hopefully some of those will slip in with the P1s...

I would like it better if the barrel was shorter, just looks kinda odd with barrel extending so far past the end of the slide.

There are actually some out there with shortened barrels courtesy of the East Germans / Soviets; also with shortened slides / barrels for using a suppressor. See Dieter H. Marschall's book "Handguns of the Armed Organizations of the Soviet Occupation Zone and German Democratic Republic", English version of the original, from Ucross Books. The original is titled "Die Faustfeuerwaffen der bewaffneten Organe der SBZ/DDR". I might add this book is a "must have" for the serious cruffler (holder of a curio and relic license).

I spent a lot of time smoothing out the trigger on that P6 and playing with Wolff main spring kits...I got a lot of the grittiness out of it, but could never get the DA pull down to a level I liked without introducing light primer strikes.

It was a wonderfully built pistol though, and probably the pistol I shot the best (in SA) apart from my P7 (also sold). What can I say...I'm really picky.

Love the quality, but the trigger ruins it for me. Same reason I got rid of my SIG P6. A bad trigger just ruins a gun for me. Not fun to shoot.
Boy ain't that the truth!
I expect most military hand guns to have a lousy trigger, The P-1 didn't disappoint in that regard and mine shot so high it was a joke. I purchased this one several years ago when they were selling for around $180.00 so I did fine on the resale earlier this year. It was a very early P-1 that was also marked P-38. Excellent condition and the holster looked near new. Too bad the trigger was so lousy and the front sight was way short.

FWIW, my CZ 82 is probably the biggest turd of a gun I've ever owned, and I've owned a few. It shoots well enough and the trigger isn't horrible, but it stuffs up once or twice per magazine and that's completely unacceptable. I ordered a set of 3 different Wolff springs but that didn't help at all. Recoil from the 9x18 in that gun is much stouter than you'd imagine. After 500 rounds down the pipe I hate mine.
