Well all my high hopes went out the window after not being able to find a 300 whisper barrel for a decent price.

So on to my backup plan.. building a .308 just for Subs..
Having some issues with what twist barrel to get.

Thinking about a 16" barrel with a 1:8 or 1:9 twist for a 200-220gr bullet?
Goin to be a dedicated sub sonic rifle. but it should still shoot a supersonic 175 gr or so pretty decent.
By the time i finish the build i hope to have my can by then if that tells ya how slow im goin to be finishing it :lol4:

Sounds good to me! Or you may be able to get a Steven's action for dirt cheap from the factory.

Barrels are around 260+shipping.

After doing some math, just buying the rifle and changing the barrel later might be much cheaper. Heck, you might be able to find a .300 whisper barrel by the time you decide to get a new barrel!

Thats what my plan was, but id have to go thru the trouble of making the brass and getting a barrel chambered for it. Or i could just go with the .308 and use some cheap lakecity brass for blasting and good brass for the quality ammo :gun:

I havent found a stevens action yet.

Jim Briggs at Northland Shooters Supply carries Savage actions. He has Stevens Model 200 blued short actions, center feed, with .473 bolt face for 22-250/308, and factory trigger for $230. Contact info is below. You would probably come out slightly ahead by buying the complete gun from Academy and selling off the barrel, stock, and maybe the trigger, but this would save $70 on the front end and some time/hassle.

Alot of people that build custom rifles on sage actions remove the nut...just something to think about. There really is no need for the nut.

If you intend to build a dedicated subsonic rifle, perhaps the 7.62x39 case would be more appropriate. Another option would be the .30-30 or .30 Herret in a Contender.

ah thats what i thought, i saw a guy taking a savage target action and had a barrel on the lathe taking off a little at a time till the headspace was right..

I like having the barrel nut since i dont have a lathe and like to learn this kinda stuff.

I found this on some info about a Sako TRG22...

""For the .308 Winchester chambering the 280 mm (1 in 11 inch) right-hand twist with four grooves was selected over the 305 mm (1 in 12 inch), traditionally found for the .308 Winchester, as a compromise when switching between supersonic and subsonic cartridges.""

So a 1:10 twist should do pretty good for subsonic?
