I read about it on a couple of other gun boards and was hoping it was a regional problem, but it appears to affect us, as well. This is the 550 count value pack, for what that's worth. Not sure if other varieties are affected or not. I've always liked this stuff and the last batch I bought a few months ago was just fine, but I bought a couple of bricks last week at the Ridgeland Walmart and I'm afraid it's so grungy and corroded that I'm not even gonna try it in my gun. Not sure what the problem is, but this stuff is plain old nasty. It looks like something more than just a few got wet problem. Looks more like a bad chemical reaction and is affecting the copper and brass, so much so that some of the bullets look swollen and mis shapened. I plan to return both these bricks since they're both from the same batch. The lot number on both of mine is 1GX605.

I have been "hoarding" this stuff for a couple years --- do I need to go take a look at all of them? Is this something recent?

I was the range officer for the 4H District .22 rf Pistol Match in 2008. Most of the shooters there had Federal Bulk ammo from Wal-Mart. Out of 28 shooters we had 19-20 pistols that had at least one malfunction. I went up and down the line and liberally sprayed oil on the working surfaces of the pistols. It made little difference. One of the kids had a S&W Model 17 and it would not fire the ctgs reliably. Many of the malfunctions in all the pistols were failures to fire.

It seemed to me that the ammo was not loaded to high enough velocity. There were a lot of stovepipe jams.

It was raining at the time but I loaned my Ruger Mark II loaded with Aquila Centurion .22 rf ammo and that person had no malfunctions.

I think this is a current problem from what I've read. The last I bought was in good condition. As a matter of fact, it went out with a gun I sold Chainsaw 51 and he let me know he and his daughter were enjoying it, so I @$$ it cycled just fine for them. I knew of the problem before I bought this last batch and wanted to check it in the store, but unfortunately, these boxes are sealed and have to be unzipped. Both of these boxes were pristine, nice and shiny with no signs of moisture inside or out. That's why it was somewhat perplexing, because QC must have thought they were OK when they left the factory. It's almost as if some sort of chemical reaction occurred after the boxing took place, however it didn't soil the boxes at all. Wish I had my camera here for a pic, because the problem would be more than obvious visually.

I guess I'll be switching to another brand of bulk ammo now. I hate it, too, because I really liked these in the past and the 3 cents a round price was nice. Not sure which to switch to, because I've read bad reports concerning the other 2 big companies bulk ammo, too. Seems all 3 of them have some QC problems with thier bulk ammo, but anything would be better than this. The occasional squib is bad enough, however somewhat acceptable as long as it doesn't lodge in the barrel. I just hate to run something obviously this nasty through a brand new gun. I'm sure it would probably clean up OK, but just doesn't seem prudent. I hope they get this addressed quickly. I'm pretty sure from the reading I've done that they've been made aware. I probably should myself, but won't since I haven't shot any of it. I'll leave it to Walmart as to whether they want to resell it or not.

The Winchester 333 always gave me a lot better accuracy and reliability than the federal bulk packs. I see now they have a Winchester 555 pack. Should be just as good but 555 rounds rather than 333 rounds. Give them a try I think they are only a little higher in price and most Walmarts around me carry them also.

Well, I wound up doing what I said I wasn't and can officially pronounce this stuff as junk. I'd like to say I was bold, but the truth is I was just too lazy to carry it back to Walmart this morning. I hated to take back an open box of bulk ammo, as well. Figured it might be a hassle, but the sealed box is certainly gonna be exchanged for some Winchester or other brand. I sort of hand tumbled it a bit in an old towel, but it didn't clean up much.

Took it and my new Charger to the range this afternoon and things started out dismally. I loaded the factory mag and 3 hi-cap mags before I left home. I think it was a combination of bad ammo and the gun requiring some break in, but I couldn't get 4 straight shots out of any of the mags. All that made it to the chamber without jamming shot, but not that well. The report from about a quarter of them was noticably lighter than the others. Obviously underpowered. All of the initial jams were FTFeeds that I would lay on the gun needing a little seating in. I cleaned it before shooting it the first time, but I didn't detail strip it. Perhaps I should have, but that straightened itself out after about a hundred rounds. I did have to discard a half dozen rounds that were bent to badly to retry. The ones that weren't damaged shot OK. I sure got tired of clearing it, though.

However, that's not the end of the story. Once the gun smoothed out, about once a mag, I'd get a stovepipe FTE. I always knew when it was gonna happen, though, because those were always the light rounds and I could hear that they weren't right as soon as I pulled the trigger. I did manage to get around 350 rounds down the pipe, but I can't say it was all that enjoyable. That said, I do think the gun is gonna be enjoyable once I get some decent ammo.

This Charger is more of a fun gun than anything you'd find useful, not that there's anything wrong with a fun gun. Shooting it is a hoot and accuracy is good enough for a plinking pistol, but I don't think I'll ever be able to control it well enough to shoot squirrels. Even though it's a 10/22 varient, it's really nothing like one. It's too front heavy and unbalanced for a small caliber pistol and keeping it on target isn't easy. That's probably why they put the bi-pod on it, however it didn't seem to help much. I'm sure I could give a bunch of cans hell, but I'm afraid I wouldn't put poor squirrels through my ineptness. I shot mostly steel today, but would estimate my groups at around 4 inches, with quite a few flyers, hopefully ammo related. I'll probably improve, but really don't see this thing becoming a competent hunting firearm, even with decent ammo. But, I am looking forward to giving it a workout with some.

I don't regret buying it at all. I knew it was somewhat of a specialty gun and I think it'll be a lot of fun once I shake all the bugs out of it. It's pretty and it's unique. Beyond that, I figure anything else it gives me is gravy.:) I'm happy, but I'll be much happier once I learn what she likes to eat. She sure pukes on this Federal bulk stuff. Not sure I'll be buying more bricks than I intend to shoot in the future.

Please enlighten me, preferably with a photo. I'm not familiar with a "Charger". If you've posted something somewhere else I've missed it.

Sure. This is a stock photo, but looks identical to mine. It's just a 10/22 that Ruger made into a pistol. All the parts are interchangable, however the laws keep you from doing a lot of things with the pistol version. There are thousands of custom parts available for them, though. You can easily wind up with $1200 to $1500 in one, if you're not careful. I plan to keep mine close to stock, though. I'll admire the customs from a distance.:)

Well, now I'm a little miffed about this issue. Took the sealed box back to Walley World this morning for a refund and was told all ammunition sales are final and non-refundable. My sales ticket said so much, so I couldn't argue with them too much. Not sure if that's a Walmart policy or possibly Federal Law, but it suks, just the same. I planned to try and finish off the 200 or so I had left from the first box, but now, I think I'll contact Federal and ask them to replace both boxes with something I can use. I think they owe me the ones I tried to use, if for nothing else, the aggravation they caused. About all I can say is you might want to be careful buying Federal bulk ammo from Walmart for a while. I just spent about $34 on some worthless junk that I'm stuck with and I'm not happy at all.:(

I knew there was something I forgot. Meant to update this one. Strangest thing, I opened the second box and it was just fine. As a matter of fact, I took the remaining rounds from the first box and tumble wiped them again in an old towel. They were still a little grungy, but shot just fine in both my guns, as did about 200 rounds used out of the second box. I will say that the bottom rounds in the first box looked a lot better than the ones at the top did. Not sure what happened, since they were both from the same lot, but the problem seemed to be isolated, at least for me, anyway. Sorry to have sounded an unfounded alarm, but that one box was pretty nasty. Perhaps it was from the end of a run or something???

Things like this though are why i open every box of ammo as soon as i get home with it. Ive started putting boxes of ammo into ammo cans as well to try to keep humidity and chemicals at bay.
