What's 'the rest of the story'?

Is it a Harbor Freight strip?

It's a Home Depot and walmart product.

Was in my ammo plant, bought from Walmart/China mart,in the section by the extension cords. It's a beefy unit with 8' of 3/8ths diameter cord and a metal plug case. I would have thought it would have been a great tool.
The thing was sitting on top of my loading bench, plugged into the wall. No load was being pulled from it.
Luckily my wife walked thru my building to go check on the chickens, and happened to smell something like burning plastic. She opened the door for the plant and seen the thing smoldering.

    Could have been really bad.

Glad you found it before it caught up and hit your powder supply.

What size breaker do you have on that circuit?

That room has one breaker for the three recepticals and two overhead 4" fluorescent fixtures, its a 20amp.
The odd thing is,this thing has a rocker switch on it and that was off.
I'm going to dissect it at some point this weekend and more than likely build my own version like I normally do.

These sell for $50 on eBay last I checked. I have about $20 in mine if I remember right. It’s rated at 20 amps but is way under rated. This one has a 10ga cord rated at 30 amps

That's mighty strange. Usually it doesn't take much to trip one. Maybe it had just started?

Don't know. I kept the low amp breaker for reasons just like this.
Most all the 120v breakers in the main part of the shop are 30amp......running power tools/wood working stuff. On that room tho I wanted the breaker pretty close to the amps that room will pull while I'm in there because if I huh oh,I would have the power kill itself.
When I'm in there the lights are on and the a/c unit is on wide open, there's also a radio going. Also if I'm loading shotgun shells......there can be table top drill press running. Not to mention 3/4/5hr casting sessions.

Must have been a short upstream from the internal breaker. Maybe where the wire enters the multi-outlet thing . . .

Walmart would probably give you another one just like it if you returned it.

I think that you can have a high resistance short that doesn't exceed the breaker's rating and therefore does not trip it.

    Kind of rare though.
