As the title says I am behind on my preparedness level other than guns and ammo.

Which water purifier would be good to get, thinking something individual and bulk storage

Also I have been looking at the mountain house freeze dried can meals, go with them or something else?

Also looking for lantern, or should I get something else for a light source, and sometype of stove.

Thanks in advance for helping a dummy out.

We have a Big Berkey filter and we like it alot. I don't know a whole lot about freeze dried food. I know that mountain house is a very reputable brand, though. As for lighting, I would suggest having a variety of options (flashlights, headlights, hand-crank, etc...). We have several of the old glass lanterns as well as a few cheap ones from walmart. Of course, you'll also need the wicks and oil/kerosene.

Just a couple of thoughts here-----

Survival means something totally different if you're a young, single man in contrast to a middle-aged married fellow with a wife and two or three kids.

A lot of this depends on your particular situation and whether you're looking for stuff that can be used if you're hunkering down in one location or planning on having to be on the move (and then you get into the question of "in a vehicle" or "on foot"). Another big question is what duration are you planning for, 10 days or 10 months? It really does make a difference. In terms of the long haul, eventually you run out of filters and fuel. Not saying that stuff isn't great to have, just that in the worst case, you always need to plan for the most simple case for food, water, fire and shelter. These are a few light weight things I like to have around that are good for a lot of scenarios:

Fire Starters - I love these two. The Blast Match and the Spark-Lite. I've used them both personally and like them a lot. I have a few of each scattered around.

Portable Stoves & Water Filters (keeping in mind that nothing beats a fire and a pan):
MSR Whisperlite and MiniWorks have done well for me but here's a nice selection you might look at. Also, always keep some purifying tablets.

You might want to consider a good pack and tent. Those things are useful for recreation as well as survival. People who do a lot of hiking in remote areas basically are in a survival situation by choice so a slight modification of that works pretty good. :2c:
