BM, is there resistance when the case mouth first enters the factory crimp die? The crimp die in my 4-die set of 40 S&W does this, and I don't like it.
Yes it does, and I don't like it, either.

Also, make sure the seat die is not screwed in too far. There should be a very noticeable bell left on the case after the bullet is seated.

BM, I tried to take a close up picture of the bell on a case after the bullet is seated. 10+ pics on 3 different backgrounds and they all sucked. Sorry.
I'll try to load a gew tonight and take some pictures.

What does the bell look like after the bullets is seated?
Sorry, some of the pictures aren't very clear.

This is the bell....

Those rounds look much better.
Thanks!

I really appreciate your advice / help. Went by Shrek's yesterday, and he showed me how to make sure the plug(?) in the crimp die was in "right side up". Do you know why the OAL varies a couple thousandths of an inch up and down?

Also, I kept the rounds I loaded this morning separate from the others, to see if there's a noticeable difference.

Your bullet is pushed in the case not from the tip but the area where the seating plug contacts the bullet. This area might vary slightly from bullet to bullet. It is very common for the OAL to vary a couple thousands of an inch. If you had a plug molded to the exact profile of your bullet you might be able to reduce how much it varies but I doubt you will ever get rid of it all. Jacketed bullets might have less variance if the plug matches well but it will still vary a little. Also how you use your caliper could make readings off just a tad.

Bottom line is a couple thousands plus or minus doesn't make enough difference most of us could ever notice. A chronograph might see a couple of feet per second difference. Slight changes in powder in the case will make a greater difference.
Gotcha. I could see the variance being caused by build up in the die, making the bullet seat farther in, causing a shorter OAL. The longer OAL was what had me shaking my head. Once somebody smarter than me explains it, it makes perfect sense -- kind of like why lighter bullets use more powder.

Hey, BM,do have any of these left, I would love to buy a few to run thru my DAN WESSON 357. at M & G next month.
No, Bobcat shot all those up. All he has left now are 147 grain RN, and a few each of the 142 grain BNWC and 110 grain SWC. Actually been cruisin' the net this morning looking for the best price I can find on those two bullets.

These are the best groups I got with the 160 grain bullets. These were at 10 yards, from a rest, out of Bobcat's 4.2" GP100:

105 grain, .358" diameter bullet, PPU (.38 SPL) brass, WSP primer, W231 powder (loaded 6 each with 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5 grains), 1.43" COL. Hoping these bullets (Summers Enterprises, Batesville) do as good as Subgunfan's.

Loaded up 9, 38 spl shot shells. Used 7.5 shot over 2.5gr Clays and paper wads and crimped.

Tried out 3 today. S&W 4" skinny barrel, model 10, DA only.

10 feet, was actually aiming just above the head.

Right side 10 feet, Left 5 feet

That's a "good" snake.

Rig, did you have the targets hanging up or laying on the ground? I test my snake loads with the target laying on the ground, too, and was kinda surprised by the pattern difference in some. Same load had a very different spread between hanging on the fence and laying on the ground.

Also, when you say crimped, do you mean you crimped the round closed, or with a paper wad over the shot, then crimped to hold the paper in?

I loaded a few of these. Paper patch can be a little fickle.

@BasMstr

Loaded up another round to try on the paper snake laying flat on the ground. I'm still pretty happy with the results using my M10 skinny DA only.

Snake on the right used spent primers. One got him above the eye on the right.

Snake on the left 7.5 shot.

Looks good! Did you use the primer cup & anvil? About how many do you think you were able to fit? Thinking I might load a couple with just the anvil to see how they do. Figure they'd make a nasty mess.
