saw an episode of sons of guns the other night when they cut the barrel and stock down on a side by side 20 gauge...called it a leopard gun. just got me to wondering what the law is about barrel length if its a pistol?

Still the same as if it had a full stock on it I'd think. 26" overall length minimum, with a 18" barrel before it has to start going through the red tape.

Now I've heard two theories that account for the legality of Judges and the like.
1) barrel has to be rifled and it's legal
2) has to be interchangeable with a pistol/rifle round, like the judge with the .410/.45lc.

Don't know which theory is true though. I could be off on my measurement regulations, but it's been repeated so much on here I don't think I am

A shotgun under 18" without a butt stock would be classified as an AOW under the NFA and would require a $5 tax stamp. If the same gun had a butt stock affixed it would be an short barred shotgun (SBS) and would require a $200 tax stamp. I believe an SBS can either have a butt stock or not, but an AOW shotgun must *not* have a butt stock.

Correct, to a point. A shotgun has to have a overall leangth of 26" and a barrel oal of 18" period! Any shotgun with a barrel/s under 18" or a OAL of 26" is concidered a nfa weapon ".410/45lc rifled barrel exclusion applies to pistols only" A shotgun with <-18" barrels and no stock can either be a aow or a sbs, a shotgun with a buttstock with <-18" barrels is a sbs it all depends on whats on the form 1,3 or 4. To form 1 "manufacture" a sbs or aow both are $200, however if you buy a pre made aow its a $5 stamp for transfer.
