I was having this dilemma the other day, my marlin is currently scopeless and I don’t trust my eyes to shoot open sights to 175 yards on a deer, my 6.8 SPC has limited ammo for zeroing and some practice, the .243 is scopeless with no irons, the plot is too far away for 12 gauge with slugs so I can either borrow my dads .270 or get the components to load 6.8.
I think I’m going to do both.

Lets see...

.25x284 bull-barreled '98 Mauser with double-set triggers, a f'glass stock and 20X scope for beanfields, etc.

6,5 x 55mm with a feather-weight 17" barrel in a walnut stock with a low-range variable scope for stalking (weighs 5.5 pounds).

.270 Win. in a Savage with laminated stock and mid-range variable scope for general purpose use.

.350 Remington custom commercial Mauser with an 18" barrel and a low powered scope just for hoots.

Or, I may just reach in the safe and see what my hand falls on... .257 Roberts, 8 x 57mm, 7 x 57mm, etc., they are all fun!

I’ve hunted with various .30-‘06s since I was twelve and I’ve only killed a handful with something other than .30-‘06s, or muzzleloaders, since then. This past year I got a 20” PSA PA10 Gen3 in .308 and soon after bought 1600 rounds for it. Then I decided that with that much ammo I needed a .308 barrel for my Encore, and later I got a deal on a Savage Axis .308.

So, now I have three new rifles I want to break in this year:

1. Palmetto State Armory PA10 Gen3 .308
2. My old T/C Encore w/ new .308 barrel
3. Savage Axis .308

My boys are finally interested in hunting. So, I’m planning to let them use either my Ruger MPR 5.56 or 20” PSA 5.56 AR15 being they’re the only ones I have that have magnified optics on them.

Remington m721 in 270 winchester with reduced loads pushing a 90 gr gold dot @ about 2800 fps.

AR15 in .277 wolverine with 90 gr gold dots @ about 28-2900 fps.

AR15 223 with 55 gr SP @ about 3000 fps.

Spotted a fox pair in the back yard this morning while in my pj's drinking my first morning cuppa right at sunrise. First I've seen in a few years, so I reckon they're back. I might have to sit in my hide with my 9422m Win in addition to the Henry this deer season. Might bag a little furry critter if there's no deer show up. :sneaky: :devilish:

If I could still hunt, it would depend on the distance I could see from a particular stand. For 150-200 yards or less, my .350 Legend PSA or Marlin .45-70 Guide Gun. Longer ranges would be the Ruger Gunsite Scout in .308. I don't currently own a dedicated regularly scoped rifle, just scout scopes.
