first 2 are 3" #6's and the third is a 3" slug. then a couple 00buck.
oh yeah, side saddle has 00buck and slugs sitting there ready to go.

12 ga 2-3/4 dram 1-1/8 oz of 7.5 shot. I don't like the idea of too much penetration inside a home. The pattern in most room sized areas is ablout 6-9" That much shot would do the job, no matter what the size of the shot is.

Yeah we've bought into the slug and 00 buck deal...
folks really...7.5's and 6's really will get the job done...safer as well for others...
Go pattern your gun and shoot a few water jugs at home defense ranges and see if you are not still impressed..
and G1D is right...need a reload handy as well...I keep the side saddle stocked...10 shots before the 870 goes dry

I have Hevi-Shot loaded up these days. Doesn't matter, though. Chances are I will grab a pistol first in the heat of the moment. Especially since there is usually one on me.
Do us all a favor, sidroski and anyone else reading this. If someone breaks in your home, kill the idiot so he doesn't end up at my house or the house of an 88yr old couple the next time. :thumbup:

Once i had a BG coming in my bedroom window (in Florida). The sound of the 870 12 ga being functioned was enough for him. He nearly killed himself leaving.SJ said:

A good setup 12ga HD shotty with the right ammo [2 3/4] will hold 9 pellet 00 buck center mass on a Q target at 25 yards.
Home invasion situations is 5 to 7 yards on average.
Over penetration is possible but will not have energy or velocity after exiting BG to worry about.
Slugs for HD is a no-no imo.
If someone else will be using the HD shotty [wife, kids, elderly], 20ga would be my choice.

I guess this may sound cold....but if someone is brave enough to enter my house for some ill known purpose (especially at night where indications are that we are home) and I confront him - I want him dead.....period. I must assume that since he should know we're home, that he is willing to harm or kill us to do his dirty deeds... I don't want to shoot a light birdshot at him, he gets away wounded, and comes back for revenge at a later date - on his terms...
Of course I understand also about wall penetrations.... and I also am fully aware, as each of us needs to be, of my family's paterns... especially sleeping paterns. My house is an older (my wife's grandparents') simple design with an open living/kitchen area and a long straight hall... also has paneling walls - not really sure if they'd be better than sheetrock... All entrances if approached from my bedroom are clean, clear shots that have no potential to enter a bedroom without passing through cabinets, closets, appliances, and/or bathroom first.....
So I'll shoot the SOB with the killingest round I have!

·true. i would use 4's. good size round.
Don't anyone take me wrong when I say the rest will run that it means I will have quit shooting. I have already told my stepson when he was still living at home not to ever come into my BR without announcing himself because I am not a cop and I don't yell freeze before I start pulling the trigger.
