Would like something to keep water in, something that had not been used to store chemicals. How ya'll gonna gather water and transfer is to your storage container?
BTW, Kangaroo's got water for 2.99 for a about 16 to 20 water bottles (needed to check them out but I was in a hurry). I'll go back and get about 10 for 30 bucks.

I've got plenty of drums, but they've all been used to store chemicals. Your best bet would be to find a way to clean the drums for potable water. I do not store water in mine so I have not done any research on that. Your research would need to be chemical specific.

I bought some barrels from here. Good prices and they seem to be good quality.

I've used the white plastic drums that coke, dp, and sprite syrups were stored in. They clean up pretty good, but still had a slight taste in the water. Once filled and refilled with a couple years in between fillings, the cola taste will leech out of the plastic pretty much to undetectable levels. I no longer use barrels since I've got my own well and pump now.

I've seen water stored in metal drums lined with HD garbage bags end up leaking through the plastic and rusting them after a couple years. although metal drums are plentiful, bad idea.

Another option for water you'll be drinking is to store it using poly bottles like hawaiian punch or cokes come in. This stuff in virtually indestructible and clean. Milk jugs are not a good idea due to the material deteriorating after a couple years.

Thanks for the suggestions. From roughnecking offshore, I know some of them chemicals will burn your insides from in to out and the steel ones are no good either. I'll check craig's list and Johnson's guy. No point in a good rain if you can't collect the water. That was a mess over on Peirson Rd. with the sewer and fresh water mixing. Good chance of e-coli and such.

Okay guys I have been in the chemical business for 30 years, if the drum is poly/plastic, it is porous and you can't get some stuff out of them. The only way to go is to buy "NEW" drums, not reconditioned because they are just triple rinsed and back into the line. Now the ones mstrsippy can get that had saline solution, maybe. Just be sure that is what was in them. Just my 2 cents

Do plastic drums have the same labeling on the bottom as water bottles do? The triangle with a number inside of it, supposedly tells what kinna materials was used to make the bottle and if is safe to be reused for storing water. This could be an issue if you store water for several months and the plastic starts to deteriorate and possibly cause a sickness.

It may be a non-issue but it wouldn't hurt to look into before storing water for a period of time.

A couple of years ago I bought 3 new plastic drums at the Rankin County CO-OP for about $10 apiece... Dunno if they have anymore or if they are that price still. Food for thought.

merg66, To my knowledge the drums don't have markings with type materials. Most are either poly or steel or stainless steel. You need food grade drums and if you store them in the white translucent ones keep them out of sunlight or they will grow slime in them. Go online and google water storage, they will recommend to put bleach in it to curtail growth of bacteria/slime. Mac
