About to quarantine myself to just such a fate. (In the land of Crappie world)
Picked up a new cranking battery a few weeks back,

My dad would ONLY use minnows for white perch / crappie
and crickets on a hook with a very small round cork bobber
for bluegill and chinquapin(assuming I spelled that correctly) and to this day I love catching a mess of any
of them, almost as much as eating my weight in them later
once I had cleaned at least half the catch though I am to this
day lousy at scaling them.
