I'm looking to buy my first AR here in about a week when I get home from work. We drilled the last several wells way ahead of the curve, the bonuses finally hit the bank, and it's time for daddy to get a new toy. So......

Aside from the cool factor being way off the charts, why should I get an AR? Somebody give me the sales pitch.

Any recommendations on brands? I talked to one of the service hands here at work and he said that Colt and Bushmaster are pretty good brands. I know Rock River and Head Down also make them. What's best?

I'm wanting to get rid of my .22wmr and use this for coyote hunting. With that in mind, what things should I be looking for?

Since i'm probably gonna spend close to a grand, I need some input from those who know these guns. :thanx:

Why and AR? Well you already covered the Cool Factor! Probably the most bought platform there is out there (may the Ruger 10/22 can give the AR a run). Can do so much off this platform it will drive you crazy deciding what you want and how you want it!!

Regarding makes - Sorry, but you are going to get about as many different suggestions as we have AR owners on this board!! I have a Colt and several Bushmasters but have shoot a good many of the other manufactures. Most stock factory ARs are able to hold their own ... Now, as jbpmidas suggest, you can build your own with just a little assistance - maybe none! That way you can customize it to your liking for the beginning ..... good quality parts is a must ...

Let us see how others will respond to your inquiry!!

With your intended use don't worry about brand name. You'll find quality with all the top 50 [probably a low estimate] brands on the market.

If you don't want to build one as suggested. Consider getting the upper you like to go with the lower you like.

Upper: Look at the varmint uppers. Quality barrel, 20 inch [no real gain going longer]. My suggestion on twist is 1.7. [NOTE] If going to hump this thing over hill and dale forget the bull barrel. The varmint upper will have all the rest, free floating barrel, matched bolt to barrel extension. Bolt carrier group will have been coated. No iron sights just a flat top to mount a scope.

Lower: Consider the Magpul PRS stock as it's adjustable for the cheek weld and length of pull. Important for scope shooting. The lower should have a two stage trigger around 3.5 pounds. The ergo pistol grip [much more comfortable] will probably be on the lower already.

Scope Mount: Get the Nikon AR Mount for your optics.

Now, go get the yotes.

It is the most accurate platform in a military style rifle. I would suggest buying a Rock River AR15A2 National Match Rifle. Our club has 3 of them and I have one. All the rifles will shoot MOA at 100 yards with peep sight and post front sight. The resale value of the Rock River would be higher than a put together rifle. The trigger and barrel would be superior, unless several hundred dollars is spent on these superior parts.

Another plus for the RR is their service. It is lifetime guaranteed and I have had one problem with the trigger on my rifle. Their service department had my lower back to me in 14 days.

Another plus is the rifle may be used in NRA-CMP service rifle matches.

Don't buy a bushmaster or colt.....unless it's one of the older pre-ban models and you just like vintage guns (waiting for the colt/bushmaster crowd to blow up on me  ). I have been very disappointed in the quality of their newer guns, all of them seem to have a good bit of slop between the upper and lowers and the quality seems lower than that of the other popular brands.

I personally build all of my own from parts now so I can have it just like I like them. For an affordable, quality complete gun I would reccommend Rock River Arms or Spike's Tactical followed by DPMS. Both make very nice guns that are not overpriced. My dad has a RRA and my brother has a Spike and they both are very solid, no slop, shoot great, great finish, etc.

If i had to pull one off the shelf? The Smith M&P VTAC would be a fine choice, free floating handguard. Rails only where you need them. Swap out the stock with the magpul PRS as suggested above. I like Magpul's MIAD/MOE grips, but that's me. Lots of people like the Tango Down or the Ergos. Larue SPR scope mount, and glass of your choice.

Why an AR? What else do you need besides cool factor lol? Ultimate customization. Massive market. Great accuracy.

I'm in the middle of building my first AR. Originally I did it to try and cut down on cost, but it really is a lot of fun to be able to order the specific part that I feel fits me the best, slowly building up a gun that is specifically tailored to me. Makes it feel a lot more personal and such.

Be careful if you decide to build. After I built my first I realized that had a terrible case of BRD and now I can't seem to stop. In all seriousness, I would not recommend buying over building your own. Building your own is almost as fun as shooting it.

I own several - or more - They used to be fun .... have not shot one since our Camp McCain shoot and probably will not until our next shoot .... They have their place in the Cool weapons corner but I have found that once you own a couple, other things begin to take the priority of time and money.
