I was thinking about picking up a cheap .22 LR revolver to shoot plates with but then I got to wondering, will it even knock down the plates? I know that not all plate racks were created equal, and I was curious as to if you guys had ever shot the plates at Magnolia with a .22? Does it take a particular type of round to knock them down?

If it's the same plate rack they had last year, then the answer is....kind of.

Shooting .22 LR out of a 5-6" barrel was iffy -- a good, solid hit dead center or above should knock the plate down. A glancing shot or nearer the bottom of the plate might knock it down, and might not. But it definitely doesn't knock it down with authority like a centerfire round.

Still fun shooting, even if the plate doesn't go down you can usually identify the hit if you resprayed the plates recently.

my 5.5" Ruger 22/45 will knock them down with a hit at the top 3/4 of the plate, any lower and you might have to hit it again.
They are adjustable also, there is a bolt at the bottom that you can set the "sensitivity" with.
