i have a female friend who lives alone and works nights . she wants a handgun to keep in her can and walk in to her house with. she is scard now that she saw someone in her yard one night. she likes the compact xd and any glock she can get her hands on. she wants a semi auto not a revolver. i told her a glock was a bad idea due to the saftey issue . she shoots better than me with a handgun some times so i aint worried about that. my question is any problem with a compact xd? wat yall recomend 9 or 40 ? she has shot my compact kimber 45 and glock 22 with no major problems .

can she work the slide on the 40? My wife can cycle my XD9, my .40 and .45's are too much for her. If she doesn't have that problem let her go with whatever she's more comfortable with. Aside from that I've carried an XD9 Service and and XD40SC for years with thousands of round through them.

On another note, not to really deviate, but I wouldn't not consider a glock because it has no external safety. Revolvers generally don't have safeties, but nobody ever complains about that. If she's smart enough to keep the ol' booger picker of the trigger she'll be good to go with either platform.

she takes my glock 40 apart every time she is around it . the glock problem is i know she will end up putting it in her purse with other stuff in it. she trys to steal my glock everytime i leave for work . and she is not keeping my kimber 3 weeks at a time let alone riding around with it and leaving it in her car. if you cant leave a human baby in a car you cant leave my metel baby in a car. so the 9 sounds good?

Tracking, I wouldn't be comfortable with in a purse without the trigger covered. If she isn't going to keep it holstered the XD would be a good choice. Personally I like my XD40SC for a carry gun, but I'd be just as comfortable with the 9mm. If she can, try both and see what she shoots the best.

Maybe at least find her some kind of pocket holster to cover the trigger or somethin. And then I'd say one is as ideal as the other. I have no experience with a glock or a xdsc(one of my next guns though I hope), but I do love my xdm40. If she likes the bigger cals then that's what I would push....but that's nothing against the 9...it's just I'm partial to cals that start with .4...

My fiance is not a fan of my xdm40 at all, but she likes my Govt model high standard...and I can't prise my ar away from her. Some women are just weird I guess.

She don't need to have any gun, external safety or not, just tossed in her purse without a holster. I'd go so far to say she needs a purse made specifically for carry that has a dedicated pocket. Gun sharing pocket with other stuff= bad idea!

And get her a lock box if she is gonna leave it in her car. No need buying a gun for a thug. Lock boxes can be had for 30 dollars. A worthy investment.

I prefer XD 40 over most anything. Its what I have shot most and am comfortable with. Go to the next gun show with her there are some purses there made just for conceal carry of a handgun that I think are kinda cool looking. Let her look at them and see what she thinks that may solve the problem of carrying it in her purse safely and then the carrying in her purse won't be a factor in what pistol she gets.

Let her look at a Keltec pf9 it has a double action trigger. I have the pf9 and the Glock26 and both are safe pistols, as long you treat them with safety in mind. Always treat any firearm as it is loaded and ready to fire. Also She can look at the Beretta Tomcat in .32cal its not as much fire power but its double action wiith tip-up barrel. It's easy to load and no slide to work when loading and unloading. I have the Beretta 21a/22lr, it,s not much firepower, but loaded with CCI stingers it would get the job done in my humble opinion. Hope the helps :sunny:
