Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone out there owns/uses a Remington Special Field 870 12 (or 20) gauge? This model features the English walnut stock and has either a 21'' or 23'' barrel depending on the year of production; these were only manufactured from 1984 to 1990 (I believe 1990, but have read elsewhere online that they were produced through 1993/1994).

Just looking for some feedback/reviews on this particular model. There are many very knowledgeable people on this forum and am hoping for any input or feedback.

God bless

I have owned several and loved them all. Of course I love a straight stock! I believe the length of the mag tube is shorter on this model, so a regular 870 barrel won't interchange.

still can't believe no one else has one of these Special Fields or has had one of these to talk about their experience with it.

I love mine. not good to shoot skeet with (obviously since it has a 21'' barrel) but great for short distance shooting

For me - the straight stock does not cut it. I suggest you find a straight stock gun and shoot it before you buy one. Or be prepared to sell the straight stock and get a conventional pistol grip. But - you may like it staright--- that's why you shoud shoot one befor spendinfg your money.

Browning currently offers their BPS in an almost identical configuration... straight "English" stock and similar barrel length with vent rib.

Yes, I love how the English style stock feels.

i had one back when they still made them . i loved mine i wish they still made them . there great for hunting in the thick spots where alot of wood ducks hide out. the short barrel shoots as good as a 28 in. inside 35 yds.

I had a 20gauge w/ the English stock, youth model, it was about the handiest shotgun for around the house use - relatively close range dispatching of varmints, etc. and would be a pretty good house gun. Had to sell it in hard times, I'd love to buy another one.

I was surprised at how well it shot under 40 yards. Like you said, perfect for thicker spots.

I love the look of the straight stock shotguns. One of my Parkers has a straight stock.

the rem choke system is one of the best out there. and you cant beat the price . i have herd lots of shooters saying they dont like the new 870s because of the trigger being plastic. and the quality in general is not as good . i found a man two years ago that had an 870 made in 1988 that was in the box and had never been shot.so i scooped and have used it for squirrles and ducks, rabbits & deer .some no sholders too.

The question of whether a rem or Browning shotgun shoots better?
This has never been my experience. They both shoot very well. I wonder if the two guns you are comparing have screw in chokes?
You might want to check them because they can be off a little gun to gun. Meaning, you really need to "sight-in" particularly with the turkey and full chokes because sometimes when you screw them all the way in, they will shoot off center! A little tape on the end of the barrel can fix it, but it can happen.

I have one in 95% condition that I will sell. Bought it new in 1984 I think. Has a modified choke and 21" barrel.
Call 662 207-1103 if interested.
